Sr. Lead Engineer, Supply Chain Development Center

Overview

The Senior Lead Engineer will lead and be responsible for the technical design, improvement and maintenance relationship of projects within Supply Chain Innovation development and prototyping operations. This role will be located within the Supply Chain Development Center (SCDC), focused on innovating distribution facility, equipment, tools, machinery, and related areas of a world-class food Production Distribution Center (PDC) serving Chick-fil-A Operators, team members, and Customers.

Leveraging their mechanical and electrical expertise, this role will lead process and equipment design, build, testing, improvement, installation and startup in support of pilot transformation/production/distribution facilities. This role will troubleshoot complex problems and will directly interface with the third-party maintenance team.

Given this is a new venture, this role will have the unique opportunity to help build our management approach and culture as it pertains to food transformation and distribution systems, by establishing standards, processes, job aids, trainings, and programs. This role will work closely with PDC leadership and different types of personnel, such as plant employees, truck drivers, equipment operators, etc., in addition to the Safety, Quality, and Compliance Lead to ensure the mission of the PDC is fulfilled.

The Senior Lead Engineer will report directly to the SCDC Manager.

This subsidiary is in the early stages of development and is a dynamic, fast-paced work environment focused on launching this new service to Restaurants across the nation.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for efficient, food safe and people safe food transformation and distribution systems
  • Develops strategies and plans to be aligned with operational needs, minimize risks, and maximize up-time and the useful life of the assets being maintained
  • Leads operational optimization and continuous improvement initiatives that drive improved system performance, balancing the needs of quality, equipment efficiency and people capability
  • Supervises installation, modification, breakdown, calibration, qualification for the machines
  • Interfaces and plans with innovation engineering resources on process changes and equipment upgrades as identified
  • Develop, lead and optimize product changeover program
  • Interfaces with building and equipment design team to ensure that operational and maintenance impacts are evaluated and plans for continuous improvement are enabled
  • Interfaces to third-party sanitation team, as it relates to equipment and process design/ improvement
  • Interfaces to the overall maintenance program including monitoring work performed by in-house team and third-party contractors for production spanning up to 3 shifts of operation
  • Ensures that the operational and financial targets of the design are being met
  • Reviews performance reports and initiates corrective action to address areas requiring attention; performs analysis including trend analysis, root cause analysis, etc
  • Participates in the capital planning process and repair vs. replace decisions
  • Participates in the selection/governance of third-party providers
  • Participates in the selection of spare parts, tools, and equipment necessary to support the maintenance operations
  • Helps set inventory levels for spare parts and identification of ways to optimize the inventory
  • Coaches teams through effective execution and build capability and ownership of systems
  • Trains staff, as required


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering and maintenance within food manufacturing and distribution operations or similar operations, including electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Must have general mechanical knowledge including knowledge of heavy equipment, electro/mech assessment, and basic production equipment functionality
  • Understanding of HMI (Rockwell Automation or similar), PLC (Allen Bradley or similar), and machine networking
  • Experience with NEC, ANSI, UL, and IEEE codes and regulations
  • Know how to use required specialty tools (multimeter, other) and operate proprietary software to troubleshoot equipment (e.g. X-ray, check weighers, VFFS)
  • Maintains industry-leading knowledge in and offers suggestions/solutions for continuous improvement
  • Ability to evaluate and quantify operational and maintenance risks
  • Ability to anticipate needs and manage shifting priorities
  • Experience leading and coaching teams
  • Self-starter with ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly motivated with strong interpersonal skills; a team player, yet also able to work independently when necessary
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing/production environment as well as a corporate one
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite


Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in maintenance within food manufacturing and distribution operations or similar operations
  • Master's degree in engineering or relevant field
  • Prior supervisory experience, particularly within a manufacturing and distribution center operations environment
  • Proven track record of inspiring and building trust for a team environment in manufacturing and distribution operations
  • Ability to lead as a servant leader with a demonstrated sense of humility
  • Prior experience in the use of CMMS
  • Deep and robust knowledge of industry standards (e.g. ISO 55000 - Asset Management Standard), leading practices, and industry benchmarks
  • Experience in Lean Manufacturing implementation, including 5S Practices, SMED, Total Preventative Maintenance and Visual Factory
