Sr. Lead Engineer

Overview

This role will serve on the Production Design Prototype Team whose primary role is to convert ideas into physical prototypes that can be tested for new food-production equipment, systems, and process designs for use in Chick-fil-A restaurants. Chief internal cross-functional partners for this position will include Production Design Imagine Team, Production Design Validate/Launch Team, Restaurant Development, Supply Chain, Kitchen Design, and Culinary Commercialization This role will be heavily involved in influencing our equipment suppliers in the specification, design, development, testing, validation and approval of equipment for cooking, processing, and hot and cold holding. A chief contribution will be to utilize disciplined principles of professional engineering analysis, problem-solving and innovative design. Position must be able to understand current state-of-the art equipment designs and apply innovative, forward-thinking design initiative prior to the need being explicitly stated or identified. This role is also expected to be an influencer and potential people leader within Chick-fil-A to help direct the organization through innovative concepts and communicate their applications in the context of menu and operational strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Directly lead new equipment design and development projects through the prototype phase
  • Provide technical leadership and influence to a team of design and project engineers and test technicians
  • Lead in the development of functional specifications for new equipment designs based on product quality, operational-process, launch-timeline and facility-space constraints
  • Lead cross-functional teams to ensure that specifications meet all business needs and that projects are successfully executed within constraints
  • Communicate well with and ability to influence non-technical business disciplines through the explanation and adoption of technology as applied to menu and operational strategies
  • Lead in the development of supplier-partner relationships to allow fast and excellent development of new equipment within demanding timelines
  • Assist in selecting, and work in partnership with, potential suppliers to refine requirements and define prototype phases.
  • Define requirements and protocol for both in-lab and in-field testing and qualification
  • Candidate will be required to leverage their skills as an individual contributor and in a leadership capacity
  • Will be responsible for aligning strategy and work output with various cross-functional disciplines including but not limited to other teams within Production Design, Restaurant Development, Supply Chain, Kitchen Design, and Culinary Commercialization


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering Discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial)
  • 5 years of engineering work experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Clear potential to be a people leader
  • Advanced project management skills demonstrated
  • Excellent communication, relational, and team skills to enable interaction with restaurant team
  • members, as well as corporate peers and leaders
  • Knowledge to produce and maintain technical specification documents on both process and equipment improvement opportunities
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams that include both technical and non-technical aptitudes
  • Experience with and an aptitude toward work involving applied research to explore and define technically vague concepts with the ability to apply them to executable projects


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in an Engineering Discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial) or MBA
  • People management experience with an engineering team in a professional environment
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling programs, SolidWorks or equivalent
  • Experience analyzing mechanical and/or thermal systems using Finite Element Analysis
  • Experience analyzing designs and/or processes using Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA)
  • Software coding experience (python, C, HTML, JavaScript are preferable languages)
  • Experience developing test systems using LabView
  • Experience in Design for Reliability
