Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Patent Counsel/Senior Patent Counsel located in Richmond, CA through January 31st, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time).

The Patent Counsel/Senior Patent Counsel is a quick decision maker operating in a fast-paced environment to guide the development, protection and use of proprietary technologies that enhance Chevron’s competitive position.  In this role, you will be responsible for providing intellectual property legal services to assigned clients in Chevron’s Downstream & Chemicals operations, primarily supporting our chemical and petro-chemical technologies and operations.  We work closely with our internal business clients and enjoy flexible work schedules.

The position resides in the Intellectual Property Law Group and reports into Chevron’s Managing Counsel for Intellectual Property.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing general legal counsel to Chevron entities engaged in technology or product development.

  • Providing IP subject matter expertise to general practice attorneys and business units.

  • Advising on the development and implementation of intellectual property protection and technology commercialization strategies.

  • Drafting and negotiating all manner of agreements, but with particular focus on technical development and licensing.

  • Assessing and advising clients on patent infringement risks and enforcement.

  • Supporting the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and non-U.S. patent applications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in chemistry, or chemical engineering.

  • Juris Doctorate degree and admission to at least one state bar or District of Columbia Bar.

  • Registration to practice before U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

  • Experience implementing and monitoring intellectual property strategies to support technology or product development and deployment.

  • Experience drafting and negotiating technology-related agreements, including license, joint development, testing, common interest, and non-disclosure/non-analysis agreements having various levels of complexity.

  • Experience in drafting patent applications and detailed knowledge of U.S. and non-U.S. patent practice.

  • Experience evaluating and advising on infringement risks and drafting legal opinions.

  • Experience evaluating potential enforcement claims and disputed matters and advising on same.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in intellectual property law, including advising with respect to freedom-to-operate or freedom to market, agreement drafting and negotiation, and preparation and prosecution of U.S. and non-U.S. patent applications in applicable technology fields.

  • Drafting and prosecution experience in the chemical arts.

  • Experience counseling chemical product development and commercial sales activities.

Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
