Senior Analyst - Financial Planning & Analysis - Field Finance

Position Description

The Senior Analyst on CarMax’s Financial Planning & Analysis team will be a driven analytical professional with the strong ability to effectively partner across the organization. This position will serve as a key finance resource for CarMax, actively providing value-added financial analysis and reporting to operational partners. They will be accountable for delivering comprehensive analyses, insight and visibility on the core drivers of CarMax’s financial performance across Used and Wholesale Sales and Margin.


  • Leverage organizational partnerships to deliver monthly review of financial performance to budget, previous year and forecast for Sales and Margin

o Deliver monthly, QTD and YTD comprehensive analysis of ongoing Sales and Margin performance

o Produce intra-month Sales and Margin Weekly Performance Review to identify emerging trends

o Build a deep understanding of all drivers of Sales and Margin and their interrelatedness, with a view of explaining performance

o Be the key resource for the organization as it relates to Sales and Margin, with the goal of communicating insights, analysis and recommended next steps

o Develop monthly sales bonus goals that incorporate recent trends, projected changes and year to date performance to bonus target

  • Responsible for developing quarterly financial forecasts, the annual budget and long-range financial plans

o Deliver performance forecasts, annual budget and long-range plans for Sales and Margin as well as the key underlying drivers

o Leverage learnings to propose and implement continuous improvements to analysis and forecasting methodologies

  • Serve as lead partner on projects that impact Sales and Margin:

o Perform outlier, benchmarking and trend analysis

o Create transparent financial models to quantify financial expectations and validate results of Marketing and Strategic initiatives

o Establish and leverage world class business partnerships to identify solutions to Sales and Margin opportunities and risks

o Collaborates cross-functionally to provide field leadership with insights and recommendations that lead to enhanced financial results

  • Design, produce, and deliver key management reports and presentations, including but not limited to:

o Executive Committee, Field Leadership and Board of Directors presentations

o Investor Relations Quarterly Earnings Call preparation and response to External Financial Analyst questions

o Monthly & Quarterly vs. budget, forecast and prior year views and insight

  • Investigate emerging Business Intelligence applications; leverage functionality to design and develop enhanced Sales and Margin financial analysis toolset

o Proven ability to communicate in a clear, concise and open manner through verbal, written and non-verbal methods, to audiences of various sizes and levels; experience developing and delivering effective presentations

  • Passion for business and desire to be a strong business leader
  • Desire and proven ability to use experience and knowledge to train and develop others


  • Undergraduate degree in Finance or other business or quantitative related discipline
  • MBA a plus
  • Three to six years of relevant FP&A and/or analytical experience, preferably in a multi-unit retail environment
  • Strong computer skills: Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau; Enterprise Financial Planning Tools (Hyperion, SQL, etc.) a plus
