Manager - Advanced Analytics

Position Description

The Manager, Advanced Analytics, will be responsible for developing advanced analytic tools to optimize CarMax digital business operations and for being a champion for data science in the organization. This associate will work in the Marketing Advanced Analytics team with a primary focus on Marketing initiatives, but will also work on cross-functional efforts and will partner directly with Subject Matter Experts on other analytic teams (Store and Corporate Strategy, Financial Planning & CarMax Auto Finance) to deliver value. The role will focus on initiatives such as:

  • Leading the development of the Marketing Attribution Model to optimize Marketing budget allocation and Marketing ROI
  • Building predictive models to identify prospects, estimate response to marketing efforts, estimate customer value, predict customer segment affinity
  • Designing sophisticated tests to collect the data needed to optimize strategies and develop the models listed in the prior bullet
  • Developing and delivering data science training for CarMax as well as creating tools, templates and processes to ensure a consistent high quality of analytic output
  • Leading the construction of an analytic infrastructure to support strategies and products that leverage advanced analytic tools (such as machine learning algorithms) [infrastructure includes resources needed to develop and implement analytic tools that drive batch and real-time processes]

This individual will be a leader in the analytic community – advancing the use of data science in high impact areas of our business. In the current state of our team this individual will manage associates but also contribute individually on key analytic projects.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Hands-on data science work (model development, test design, segmentation/clustering analytics)
  • Leading data science work across the organization (with team members, members of other teams, vendor teams, etc)
  • Developing training, tools, templates, processes & procedures to support data science work across the organization and ensure high quality
  • Partnering with IT to develop and maintain our analytic infrastructure
  • Leading team, leading cross-functional initiatives for Digital Marketing and the analytic community as a whole [e.g. analytic community of excellence events]

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong analytic leader with a proven track record of providing actionable insights and influencing strategy
  • Significant experience in data sciences with ability to lead projects from ideation/design through development and implementation/action
  • Ability to communicate & influence business managers, directors & senior leaders for influence & action
  • Ability to train and develop associates with limited background in data sciences to the point where they can perform analysis independently
  • Ability to lead projects covering the following areas:

o Statistics (regression, experimental design, clustering, etc)

o Machine Learning (coding, programmatic design, optimization, implementation)

o Experimental design & analysis

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate through written reports and oral presentations with all levels of management
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to play a leadership role in a cross-functional team
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Statistical Analysis packages/coding (e.g. SAS, R, Python); SQL/Teradata
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering or Operations Research
  • Graduate degree in Statistics or related field strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience developing statistical models and/or machine learning algorithms for large organizations
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives in large organizations

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Expertise in business analytics, data science/statistics
  • Significant experience with machine learning, regression, experimental design, decision trees, etc.
  • Internal candidates should have successfully completed Sr. MAP
