Analyst II - Teradata Database

Position Description

The Teradata Analyst II – Database Systems is responsible for the database administration of the development, maintenance and production of the database systems of CarMax IT and ensuring the database systems meet CarMax quality standards.

This position requires partnering with other members of the IT community in order to successfully complete assignments. Generally, this will involve the development or support of small to medium database systems with minimal direct supervision.


Software Development Methodology and Support:

  • Responsible for the ownership of assigned database administration tasks and small sized projects
  • Ensures that database administration support and development efforts consistently meet CarMax&reg: standards, business requirements and direction
  • Involved in software life-cycle development through analysis, design, rollout and production in order to support IT delivery of CarMax&reg: business requirements
  • Requires working with the application development teams in designing and implementing database and software solutions
  • Participates in a 24×7 on-call rotation as scheduled and must perform after hours support


  • Some responsibility for coordinating the tasks of others
  • Recognizes and steers the support tasks to the appropriate team
  • Influence the technical direction of others in order to successfully meet the business objectives of small and medium size projects

  • Excellent team player, able to lead small to medium sized development projects and organize priorities and tasks for assigned projects
  • Ability to develop and execute plans to include the evaluation of risk and awareness of production requirements
  • Understands how a specific database technology functions within a select area of CarMax or how the database technology functions within a company


Teradata System DBA is responsible for the database administration of the development and production Teradata database systems of CarMax IT department and ensuring the database systems meet CarMax quality standards.

Teradata responsibilities include:

  • Create, maintain and support the Teradata architectural environment
  • Release database objects to Production and controlled QA environments
  • Perform system level and application tuning, including TASM tuning
  • Develop proactive processes or monitoring capacity and performance
  • Ensuring appropriate storage for DBMS performance
  • Support and guide the application teams’ database needs
  • Administer database security
  • Perform backup and recovery operations
  • Archive, retain and purge data per retention plan
  • Coordinate Teradata patches, maintenance fixes and upgrades
  • Provide monthly “State of the environment” reporting metrics to management
  • Support end-user queries
  • Provide on-call support

Education and/or Experience:

Years of experience

3-5 years of Database administration experience from a single vendor (i.e. Sybase, SQL Server, Informix, Oracle, Teradata), required

Education preference

4 year degree in IT related course of study

Computer skills 3-5 years’ experience in UNIX or MS Windows operating systems, required

Application development

3-5 years’ experience supporting a Client/Server or other application development environment, required
