VP - Commercial Underwriting & Portfolio Management (Financial Institutions Group)

At Capital One, we are looking to add a VP to support management and underwriting of our current portfolio of commercial loans and affiliated bank relationships within the Financial Institutions Group (FIG). FIG is an industry specialized group supporting a national lender finance business with approximately $8B in commitments. $5B of the $8B is the Commercial Lender Finance platform (Leveraged Loans, ABL, Equipment Leasing, and Subscription Finance), which is handled through the hiring team.

The role will be instrumental in managing, communicating, and reporting portfolio trends and characteristics and maintaining appropriate levels of risk. The position will work with the origination and underwriting team in the approval, structuring and negotiation of borrowing terms and credit documents. The position is expected to work closely with the leadership team in establishing and maintaining policies and procedures for the FIG business. The VP, Portfolio Management is responsible for the ongoing identification and resolution of deviations within the context of the documented loan structure. Further, the VP/Director, Portfolio Management has the opportunity to lead and/or provide valuable input for broader business initiatives, projects and goals.

The position will work with clients and internal and external business partners on portfolio performance monitoring, general compliance and ongoing risk assessment, including responsibilities to ensure that the collateral pledged under credit agreements meets the standards set forth by the related legal agreement and is appropriately valued for the risk and characteristics of the transaction.


  • Communicate portfolio trends, risks and mitigants to senior leadership.
  • Cultivate excellent client relationships.
  • Develop and manage portfolio information needed to accommodate sound risk management, economic and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with team to prepare and present monthly/quarterly portfolio reviews
  • Lead underwriting, structuring and closing of amendments, upsizes and extensions, as needed, including annual reviews and credit approval memos.
  • Develop, manage and/or refine tools necessary to track borrower and portfolio performance, monitor trends and industry performance.
  • Support associate development through building strong relationships with the team as a mentor and/or manager as needed.
  • Collaborate with originations team members prior to loan closing on approval memos, legal documentation, collateral review and funding approvals.
  • Manage and control risks throughout the post-closing credit process to ensure strong borrower performance.
  • Monitor and enforce terms of loan agreement / documents.
  • Identify and establish best practices policies and procedures.
  • Manage other Portfolio Management functions, including collaborating with new business team on up-front and ongoing client due diligence, UCCs, etc.
  • Lead and/or provide valuable input for broader business initiatives, projects and goals.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree or Military Experience
  • At least 8 years of commercial lending experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Lender finance, ABL or securitization experience preferred
  • Proficient communicator (orally and in writing) with clients, peers and fellow associates
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with commercial loan systems
