Technical Writing Manager

Capital One is seeking a Technical Writing Manager to lead the team tasked with documenting the business-critical APIs and other developer tools available on our world-class internal and external portals. The work of this team is critical to empowering internal and external developers to build great products that reach tens of millions of consumers.

The right candidates will have a love of technology, a genuine ability to use language as a tool, and deeply technical experience as a tech writer. They'll also be strong grammarians who understand how sentence structure and word choice can clarify or obscure meaning. Juggling multiple projects and driving their successful and timely completion is their forte. They welcome technical challenges, and are fanatically focused on great user experience.

Your job will be to lead the team and the broader organization to your vision of how documentation can best serve the technical community in their use of our internal and external portals. You will work across teams and technical and product verticals to gather work requirements, resolve dependencies, and deliver content with the feature it covers. You're open to new and modern ways of constructing and delivering content, and maniacally focused on serving user needs. You're also passionate about quality and ready to do what it takes to achieve it.

As a people manager you're supportive and available, and you understand that your number one job is to support your team in the work they're doing. You're willing to work closely with less-experienced team members as they get up to speed, and comfortable with a hands-off role for top performers. You pay careful attention to the skills each team member brings, are sure to take full advantage of those skills, and ready to help team members expand their skill set.

As a team lead you understand the benefits and necessity of positive collaboration, and work hard to keep all stakeholders informed as projects progress or obstacles are encountered. You're equally comfortable reporting to leadership, interacting directly with users, and working with partner teams toward a common goal.

Above all, you're a passionate user advocate who tirelessly champions the requirement that we be of service to our users, both internal and external.

Basic Qualification:

  • Bachelor's degree or military experience.
  • 3+ years of technical writing experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of technical writing experience.
  • At least 2 year experience with SDLC.
  • At least 1 year experience with programming languages (Java, Python, Ruby or Angular).
  • At least 1 year experience in a software development.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a financial services industry.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in an Agile environment.
  • At least 1 year experience documenting REST API's.
