Strategy Design Director, Walmart Partnership

Last year Capital One and Walmart entered into a new, long-term credit card partnership that will result in Capital One becoming the exclusive issuer of Walmart's co-branded and private label credit cards. The partnership will go beyond a traditional credit card program to change how customers experience shopping. We will create a true blended commerce experience that saves customers time and money, all while promoting financial wellbeing.

To help us achieve our vision, we need to constantly look beyond today to what will be possible tomorrow. The state of retail is transforming at breakneck speed with models like digital-first, direct-to-consumer and marketplace. Traditional companies must continually innovate or get left behind.

The Design Director Role

The Walmart Partnership design team at Capital One is looking for an Experience Director who can seamlessly blend strategy and execution. This person will play a critical role on the partnership team, helping keep us informed of and focused on the possible. You'll guide us in taking next generation trends of value and making them a reality. You'll be the perfect mix of dreamer, doer, influencer and inspirer.

What You'll Do

  • Continually research and evaluate relevant market, industry and landscape trends to identify potential partnership application
  • Work with existing research teams to define, guide and analyze customer research that guides us to break-through opportunities
  • Monitor the competitor space for signs of innovation
  • Coordinate with partner innovation teams (Capital One and Walmart) to share learnings and identify areas of synergy
  • Design, facilitate and analyze workshops and rapid hacks to effectively and efficiently align on experiential concepts
  • Collaborate with functional SMEs (tech, data, legal, finance, etc.) to articulate business impact, level of effort and cost/benefit of identified innovation opportunities
  • Concept, prototype and test prioritized opportunities with support when and as necessary (technology, research, etc.)
  • Regularly share relevant trends with the larger partnership team to help keep us sharp and providing maximum value to our partners and customers
  • As needed lean into current release design work to guide successful implementation


What You Bring
  • Meaningful omnichannel retail experience
  • A proven track record of defining and promoting change and innovation
  • Great presentation, workshop and communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and organization skills
  • A positive, constructive can-do attitude
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and to both lead and do
  • An obsession with digital trends and design
  • Strong familiarity with data, analytics and technology (both front and back-end)
  • The ability to translate concepts into initiatives and roadmaps
  • A clean design aesthetic and the ability to simplify the complex
  • Payments and/or financial services experience a plus


Basic Qualifications
  • At least 10 years of professional experience designing digital products
  • At least 3 years of experience managing a team of designers


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree
  • Omnichannel retail experience
  • Experience in design thinking/ human centered design
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships and influencing at the executive level
