Qualitative Design Researcher + Strategist

Founded in 2011, Capital One Labs is the company's experimental product & technology incubator and accelerator. It's a startup culture with the financial backing of a Fortune 200 company. With teams in NYC and DC, Labs is a cross-functional team of product managers, designers, developers, and other innovators who are committed to delivering revolutionary innovation that challenges how we all interact with our money.

In this exciting role, you will lead research initiatives across Labs product teams and play an integral part in informing our new product concepts, both in physical and digital technologies. The ideal candidate is highly curious about consumer motivation, behavior and is technically adept to collect and analyze the right information to satiate that curiosity. The research you lead will immediately inform the opportunities the Labs goes after and directly will impact the product and services the company builds.

About the role and work environment:

  • You will work on project teams composed of designers, product managers and engineers to deliver new products and services.
  • You bring an informed point of view to each project team you work with.
  • You will recommend and author research plans that extract insights and shape the product decisions.
  • Your research plans will tease apart nuanced views into customer behaviors, and product performance, and provide actionable guidance.
  • You will also help develop strategic landscapes, frameworks and topologies that guide the direction of a product team, company strategies, and identify unexplored areas that hold potential value.


Your Practice
  • Craft research plans and tasks appropriate for the various stages of given products. For example, early stage exploratory research and ethnography to prototype evaluation and usability studies.
  • Execute research activities, leading the effort while still working within a team of designers, engineers, and product managers.
  • Analyze research results and distill the insights to offer guidance to product teams and further research.
  • Generate insights that fuel product ideation and help teams evaluate their designs.
  • Communicate the relevant insights in compelling and creative ways that influence how decisions are made at the most senior product levels.
  • Communicate succinctly the WHY underlying the insights to support decision making.


You are...
  • Proficient with industry tools and methods such as Design Thinking, Ethnographic research, Empathy studies, Usability, Surveys.
  • Passionate about using social psychology to inform product development
  • Human centered to the core and deeply interested in consumer insight
  • Comfortable performing analysis on large datasets and working with analytics tools
  • Analytical and driven by strategic approaches to problem solving
  • Detail obsessed and highly organized
  • Able to work accurately under tight deadlines
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with constant change


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least 4 years of qualitative and user-centered design methods
  • At least 1 year of quantitative, behavioral analysis, and statistical concepts


Preferred Qualifications:
  • MA/MS or PhD in a behavioral psychology, sociology or a related human research field
  • 1 year of experience with perception biases and personality research
  • 1 year of experience using research insights to influence brand creation
  • 3 years of experience in applied product research
