Responsibilities of the Principal Tax Specialist - State Tax:

• Preparation of state tax returns in numerous jurisdictions including unitary, combined and separate entity including calculation of apportionment factors and state modifications

• Assist in the preparation of the federal provision and federal consolidated tax return including calculating book/tax differences and preparing tax return forms and attachments

• Calculation of quarterly state estimated payments and annual extensions, including preparation of payment vouchers

• Timely and effectively research and respond to state tax notices

• Perform research on various state tax issues such as nexus, apportionment factors, filing methods and new legislative developments

• Identify, test and implement process and data solutions impacting the tax compliance and provision areas

• Research software-specific automation opportunities

• Assist in special state tax compliance and planning work as needed

• Occasional day travel to Richmond, VA

• Position reports directly to the Director, State Compliance

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree or military experience

• At least 4 years' corporate tax experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master of Science in Taxation degree (MST) or Certified Public Accountant license (CPA)

• Tax experience in a public accounting firm or financial services firm strongly preferred

• Experience using OneSource, CORPTAX, BNA, and Microsoft Office software programs

• Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and in Google Suite

• Strong communication, research and writing skills

• Ability to multi-task, work independently, develop new ideas and take ownership of projects
