Principal Engineer (Director) – Digital Reliability Engineering

Capital One's Digital Product Engineering group is looking for a technical leader / top contributor to help head up a few of our Reliability team's horizontal functions and to help develop and manage the tools and infrastructure powering all of Capital One's major customer facing applications (mobile, web, IoT, etc.).

As one of the leads within the Digital group's Reliability and Automation team you will responsible for the design, management and CONSTANT evolution of our cloud hosting platforms, deployment practices, and custom toolsets designed with the goal of making, deploying and scaling complex applications child's play. Successful candidates will pretty much be good at everything: enterprise Linux, CI/CD tooling, automating cloud based applications, container concepts, performance tuning, monitoring and will also be tasked with helping to mature our problem management and reporting functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the day to day operations of Capital One's public cloud hosted infrastructure (OS+Network+Security+Monitoring)
  • Working closely with orchestration/API, client development teams and architecture to understand their pipelines and help set our priorities accordingly
  • Act as lead engineer for our core engineering group (essentially, the lead over a small team of senior engineers) responsible for the tools used across all Digital Product (container solutions, reusable automation, data store resiliency/maintenance strategy, etc.)
  • Track system uptime, promote continuously increasing release velocity, lead problem management activities
  • Work with developers to build out CI/CD pipelines, enable self-service build tools and reusable deployment jobs
  • Find, explore and advocate for new technologies for both Product Engineering as well as enterprise use (recent examples: Apache NiFi, Consul+Fabio, Netflix Zuul+Hystrix, etc)
  • Help contribute to and constantly strengthen our endpoint security strategy for customer facing apps

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years of overall IT or military experience
  • At least 4 years' experience working with code repositories and build tools (GIT/GitHub, Jenkins/Hudson, Nexus)
  • At least 2 years' experience with public cloud offerings: AWS, Google Cloud Engine, Microsoft Azure
  • At least 2 years' experience working with cloud automation/orchestration technologies (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, OpenStack, Teraform)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Technology
  • 4+ years of experience providing enterprise Linux based system administration
  • 4+ years of overall IT experience operating or migrating to an enterprise cloud environment
  • 3+ years' experience managing teams
  • 2+ years of recent software development experience (Preferences: Python, Java, Gradle node.js, ruby, php)
  • Experience operating database technologies and building database resiliency in the cloud (MySQL, Postgress, Mongo DB, ElasticSearch, RedShift, Casandra, etc)
  • Experience designing / building big data platforms
  • Demonstrated proficiency in shell scripting
  • Strong knowledge of IT system infrastructure and networking
