Principal Accounting Associate-Retail Bank

We are seeking a Principal Accounting Associate to join the Retail Bank Accounting Agile project team to support the Retail line of business. The responsibilities of the role include implementation of corporate initiatives that have direct impacts to the Retail Bank Product Controller systems and processes. This role provides the opportunity to join a fast-paced team to learn and build accounting processes and procedures at Capital One, to grow in knowledge and responsibility under the direction of a Team Lead, and to increase influence by interacting with many teams both within and outside of Accounting.


  • Represent Retail Bank Product Controllers on cross-functional Agile project team
  • Support the Retail Bank line of business as an accounting subject matter expert
  • Partner with Accounting, Technology, Operations and the project sponsor teams for project delivery
  • Develop general ledger and reconciliation designs for new or existing processes, document business requirements and create test cases.
  • Perform test execution of new and existing accounting designs and processes
  • Provide accounting support for post-implementation process and systems during the warranty period
  • Develop and establish monitoring associated with system changes.
  • Identify and drive process improvements
  • Propose enhancements in the balance sheet reconciliation system
  • Prepare/or review account reconciliations
  • Post/review journal entries, as needed.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • 5+ years of Accounting or audit experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years of Retail Bank experience or 2+ years of Financial Services experience.
  • 4+ years' experience in an operational accounting department or similar audit experience in financial services industry
  • Agile project management methodology experience and/or Agile certification
  • Retail Banking experience
  • PeopleSoft application experience
  • ReconPlus application experience
  • Intermediate-Advanced Microsoft Excel experience
  • Demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage task completion/deliverables within appropriate timeframes
