The Team

Rooted in a strategy project led by former strategy consultants, it's no surprise that Capital One is a strategy-led company. Capital One's remarkable growth has been supported by the continued expansion and importance of the Strategy organization. The Strategy group reports directly to founder Rich Fairbank, Chairman and CEO of Capital One, and engages in a discrete number of high impact issues that drive the performance and direction of the company. Projects focus primarily on formulating enduring and profitable growth and value enhancement strategies and then working with our business and staff teams to ensure their maximum impact.

The Integrated Data Engineering, Analysis, and Science-IDEAS-team within Strategy partners closely with our Strategy, Tech, and Data Design colleagues to develop insights on consumer behavior, market conditions, and peer performance. The team analyzes and applies statistical modeling and machine learning to a wealth of customer-level and market-level data. The IDEAS team owns the end-to-end insight generation lifecycle: sourcing data, transforming data, ensuring data quality, driving exploratory analysis, building predictive models, and communicating insights. The team also provides expertise to partner teams on how to best leverage unique Strategy-managed data in their own analyses. The team creates visual, interactive data products to showcase and democratize insights, enabling our partners to leverage the wealth of data that IDEAS produces and oversees.

The Role

As a product manager on the IDEAS team, you'll be joining a passionate team of analysts, data scientists, designers, and engineers working to redefine how Strategy interacts with and leverages its wealth of data. The role has three key elements: product ownership, engagement leadership, and mentorship.

In leading product delivery and improved ways of working together, you will develop a portfolio of world-class solutions. You will create the environment in which great products flourish, where great people are at the top of their game, and where diversity and inclusion make everything better. You will lead your team through the victories and the challenges in delivering solutions that span UI to machine learning to data pipelines, front-end to back-end. The problems you will solve will be hard, the work will be hard, but you will help shape the future of Capital One.

You'll lead engagements with business partners in Strategy and multiple lines of business, including Card, Bank, Auto Finance, and Risk. You will develop an intimate understanding of both the opportunities and challenges that the business is presented with and work with the IDEAS team and its partners to deliver the data products and insights that enable Capital One to make its next move.

You'll share your years of experience in the trenches with the team and make sure the team has what it needs to thrive. You'll provide team members with coaching and help them push themselves and each other to take calculated risks and grow individually and collectively. You'll consult with the team on topics ranging from problem solving to engineering to influencing.

On any given day you'll be:

Empowered. Part of a team driving Strategy's insight and data product portfolio, responsible for delivering on a variety of engagements with business partners that inform Capital One's strategy.

Learning constantly. Work deeply with business partners, analysts, designers, data scientists, and technologists to build cutting edge solutions.

Innovating relentlessly. Pushing big change by asking bold questions; starting small, testing, and learning your way to something dramatically better.

Sharing openly. Telling stories that change the way people think about building data products and solving problems, and that illustrate the power of what software can do to make them even better.

Connecting creatively. Jumpstarting a self-supporting community by sowing the right seeds, building the right tools, integrating the right off-the-shelf products, and just plain elbow grease

Succeeding strategically. Solving the right problem and holding on the wrong one.

Here is what you will bring to the table:

Curious. You ask why, you explore, you're not afraid to blurt out your crazy idea, or follow an email chain for weeks to find someone with an answer.

Do-er. You have a bias toward action, you try things, and sometimes you fail. You dug up a hidden feature in an API that let you do something really cool or introduced a new routine that broke down silos led to better decisions.

Passionate. You care about growing others and bringing them together around what's possible. You've started Meetup groups or taught General Assembly courses because you love enabling others.

Communicator. You can communicate complex ideas clearly; your team knows their priorities and why they're doing what they're doing. Maybe you're an introvert, or maybe you're an extrovert, but nobody accuses you of keeping them out of the loop.

Wrangler. You've gotten back-end engineers to play nice with UI developers, you can inspire an ETL developer to write creatively about her latest pipeline.

Fearless. Big, undefined problems don't frighten you. You can work at a tiny crack until you've broken open the whole nut. You are comfortable saying no.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 2 years of experience in working with cross-functional teams to deliver customer experiences
  • At least 2 years of experience in working on core product platforms that power customer experiences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience working with Agile development methodologies
  • At least 2 years of experience in querying, analyzing, and working with data languages and platforms
  • At least 2 years of experience working with business intelligence tools: Amazon QuickSight, Qlik, Spotfire, Tableau
  • At least 2 years of experience in Python, R, or Scala
  • At least 2 years of experience in Spark
  • At least 2 years of experience working with and demonstrating knowledge of data governance, and data quality management concepts
  • Master's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics discipline
