Director, Data Engineering - Monitoring

As a Capital One Director of Data Engineering, you will be building our Site Reliability

Engineering (SRE) program, which includes the development and implementation of a

monitoring and alerting ecosystem in support of our enterprise data lake and tools.

Working across teams and organizations, you will establish the right tools and processes

to ensure data completeness, quality, and timeliness. You'll implement a robust

architecture to monitor our expansive cloud infrastructure, all while keeping an eye

toward enterprise standardization, scalability and automation. Also critical to success is

the implementation of a comprehensive alerting and notification infrastructure that

provides proactive statusing, as well as robust trending and operational reporting.

You'll be on constant lookout for ways to improve processes, automate redundant tasks,

and architect self-healing applications. Most importantly, you'll be leading a large team

of talented data engineers who are hyper focused on operational readiness and

developing the operational ecosystem of the future. We're looking for someone who

• Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering principles

• Experience supporting large scale, enterprise critical systems and processes

• Technical experience with RDMS, SQL, ETL, scripting, PagerDuty, EFK, ELF, Data

Dog, and Service Now

• Knowledge of AWS cloud services and products

• Ability to craft a vision, gain buy in from leadership, and see it through to fruition

• Superior people management skills and the ability to build and foster large teams

of engineers

• Familiarity with the latest trends in operational support, self healing

architectures, and notification platforms

• Excellent vendor management skills

• Ability to influence across large organizations

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree or military experience

• At least 8 years of experience working with big data technology

• At least 10 years experience with enterprise monitoring and notification tools

• At least 5 years of experience developing and leading operational readiness


• At least 5 years of people leadership

• At least 2 years of experience with logging frameworks

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Management of Info

Systems / Technology

• Experience with recognized industry patterns, methodologies, and techniques

• Experience with the full AWS stack, microservice architectures, and technologies

like Hadoop, Hive, Kerberos, Centrify, Python, Spark

• Background in agile software development and Scaled Agile frameworks

• 5+ years of experience in financial or other highly regulated industry

• Experience developing technology solutions for large-scale enterprises

• Solid understanding of AWS technologies with a focus on data tools and services

• Ability to influence others, gain consensus, and drive solutions to implementation
