Principal Mechanical Engineer

Cleveland, OH

The Principal Mechanical Engineer performs broad based mechanical design and development including: engagement and requirements assessment, mechanical architecture design, key components selection, as well as planning for integration and test. This engineer is a client-facing position who can coordinate and manage broad based product development support for clients, often through a remote team. Additionally this individual will be supporting new business development initiatives. Success in this role is predicated on an individual's ability to contribute technically across a broad spectrum of technologies, and in industries with varying regulation environments. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will work as an individual contributor and technical lead. This position will require an individual who is highly organized in regard to their own work and has the ability to provide mentoring on organizational and technical skills to others.

Primary Technical Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of complex electromechanical systems for industrial, regulated medical, automotive and aerospace industries
  • Work with cross disciplinary teams to author system requirements and performance specifications
  • Lead technical teams from initial design to final product delivery
  • Apply mechanical engineering best-practices for semiconductor equipment, safety and ergonomics standards, manufacturing integration, and medical device design
  • Apply product data management best practices including familiarity with relevant modern tools and systems
  • Create integration plans to outline tasks and sequences for the implementation of new process controls
  • Assist in drafting test plans and verification procedures for mechanical systems and component verification
  • Lead and/or provide technical peer review as required
  • Identify, track, and assess risks and mitigation plans

Primary Business Responsibilities:

  • Support new business development by representing and communicating Altran's capabilities, listening and asking clarifying questions, integrating new information and expressing yourself clearly and concisely thru excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Support Altran's proposal generation process by obtaining detailed information and requirements, structuring and organizing undefined tasks, project planning and accurate estimations
  • Understand basic account and program management processes and have the ability to collaborate with business partners in identifying technical solutions
  • Provide technical and thought leadership in customer meetings as a subject matter expert on mechanical design and fabrication processes
  • Communicate complex engineering ideas and principles in a manner that non-engineering clients and decision makers can effectively use in meeting their business objectives


  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering required, Master degree desired
  • 15+ years' experience with a minimum of 5 years in an engineering lead role that included business support for multi-disciplinary design, development, and delivery of products across the full development life cycle
  • Strong analytical skills in thermal management, vibration, and stress (static and dynamic)
  • Proficiency using 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX (preferred), SolidWorks, or PTC Creo
  • CAD data management experience using software such as Teamcenter (preferred), SolidWorks EPDM, Windchill, or Agile
  • Expertise in three or more technical specialties:
    • Optomechanical Design
    • Mechanism Design
    • High density electromechanical systems
    • Fluidics System Design
    • Thermal Management/Design
    • DFX Principles
    • Geometric tolerances and analysis
    • Manufacturing Processes (Sheet Metal, Machining/milling, Injection Molding, weldments, etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to travel to client sites with the possibility of extended stays
  • Experience working with design teams in multiple geographical locations.
  • Ability to meet position requirements with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to mentor, educate, and direct staff to achieve project goals and deliverables.
