Background to the Position

Spence Johnson's intelligence offering is structured around a series of annual reports but delivered via a service in close partnership with our clients. It is designed to embed the detailed distribution, product and competitive intelligence required to be effective now and in the future in asset management.

Role Summary

This is an opportunity for a senior and experienced hire looking for a fast paced and challenging role working for an entrepreneurial company.

MI Content leadership and NPD

  • As head of SJ's EMEA intelligence, the successful candidate would grow to be a recognised industry expert in market developments within EMEA institutional.
  • The candidate would be very comfortable with investment fundamentals, having a good understanding of asset classes and investment theory and how they relate to investment product
  • The role would involve deep content knowledge in at least 3 report sectors -- e.g. UK DC, European Insurance Asset Management etc.
  • In these Deep Content areas the candidate would be positioned as the firm's thought leader and would lead presentations with Clients and at Industry events.
  • The candidate would be responsible for keeping our Intelligence service relevant, through refining the content covered and, when necessary, recommending updates to the proposition

iMiM Intelligence Content

  • Institutional money in motion (iMiM) is the leading asset and flow database for EMEA institutional. One of the key deliverables is the Market Matrix -- a "whole of market" research output which estimates total assets and total 3rd party addressable assets by country/client type/asset class. The candidate would be responsible for managing the analyst team to annually update the Market Matrix using the MI reports and other regulatory/market sources.
  • The candidate would also input into the quarterly iMiM Trend Reports -- interpreting the quarter's flow data and adding thematic content in each edition.

Editor responsibilities

  • In addition to their Content responsibilities, the candidate would be expect to have a comprehensive understanding of the EMEA institutional market. This knowledge would enable them to act as Editor for all of SJ's EMEA output.
  • With oversight over the full research agenda, the candidate would be responsible for ensuring consistent House Views, Modelling approaches and the sharing of best practice -- in addition to following House style with regard to language, format and graphics.


  • The candidate would be responsible for managing ~10 annual report streams to quality, deadline and budget, reporting into the Director responsible for Content/Delivery
  • In addition to individual line management/mentorship responsibilities, the candidate would manage a research team of 5 analysts to achieve these goals.
  • The candidate would also be responsible for monitoring the Client Team responsibilities as they relate to managing the book of clients signed up to Intelligence streams -- ensuring presentations, updates and "research on call" requirements were being performed.


The candidate would represent Spence Johnson through speaking slots at industry events, including AIMSE, Institutional Investor and other industry bodies slots.

Required Skills

A deep understanding of the UK and European investment industry as it relates to fund management, pensions or insurance

Solid excel skills and understanding of data analysis

Excellent attention to detail and time management

Experience with managing teams

Ability to work under time pressure

Excellent written and spoken English

Happy to work in a small company with a team of bright, highly specialised cons

European languages are desirable
