Javascript Developer

Join us & participate in 90+ years of literary heritage. Own a product & grow with Book of the Month. Book of The Month's engineering team is looking for an experienced developer we can count on, just as we count on each other. In late 2015, we relaunched Book of the Month, a monthly subscription e-commerce service that provides avid readers with a fun, convenient, and affordable way to discover and buy new books. Since then, we have been growing rapidly and need an intrepid engineer who can help us scale our business.

About Our Tech

We've built an emerging eCommerce platform on React/Node/ES6/WebPack. We have a streamlined and functional code style, so any background in Lisp/Haskell/Scala/Clojure or academic approach will serve you well here (though definitely not required, we've all had to learn!)

About Our Team/Office

  • An incredible team of passionate coders with diverse backgrounds and great attitudes
  • The ability to explore projects to learn a new skill (if you don't know React, that's fine, we'll teach you!)
  • Loft style office in Manhattan's Flatiron/Silicon Alley (with a perfect view of the Empire State Building)
  • Fridge stocked with all the usual refreshments
  • Flexible working hours
  • Unlimited vacation

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience shipping production code
  • Strong JavaScript skills, as well as proficiency in at least one other language
  • Familiarity with data structures and algorithm design
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • HTML5 layout fluency, and familiar with the ins & outs of single-page applications
  • Excellent communication skills

Ideal

  • Experience with cloud application services, preferably AWS (RDS, EC2, SQS, CloudFront, R53, S3, Lambda, and many more)
  • Web application development with a fairly complex build stack (ie. webpack, React-Redux)
  • Desktop development and networking for special-purpose devices (ie. Electron, Raspberry Pi)
  • Experience with Linux bash scripts & IT automation
  • Familiarity with an ERP (ie. NetSuite)
  • And, of course, a love of reading
