Project Director - Temp

A Project Director (PD) within the Video & Post Production (VPP) department of Story & Franchise Development (SFD) oversees the creative development and production of engaging video content for Blizzard Entertainment game franchises, marketing teams and other organizational departments. The PD is a leader, an artist, a strategist, a project manager and an ambassador all in one. The PD acts as an internal and external liaison, engaging with project stakeholders to identify objectives and generate strategic creative solutions to achieve our client’s goals. The PD works with a team of editors, artists and producers to execute these deliverables, guiding projects from discovery, strategic development and ideation to production, post production and delivery. The PD works under the direction of the Senior Creative Supervisor (SCS) and efforts towards the completion of day-to-day projects while also supporting and contributing to the success of departmental initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Act as creative lead for assigned projects; partnering with managers, clients, directors, producers, film crews, editors, artists, and sound designers to produce a finished product of the highest quality
  • Direct and contribute to the success of all manner of video production including the capture of live action, game capture, interviews, development processes, events/conventions, motion capture, b-roll and more
  • Manage the creative relationship with outsource partners while directing external agencies and vendors
  • Collaborate closely with film, editorial and game capture teams to craft coherent, compelling content that leverages the best practices and cutting edge trends and techniques unique to each discipline
  • Work with Senior Creative Supervisor to develop custom creative pitches for incoming project requests as well as potential projects and initiatives that represent growth and business opportunities for VPP
  • Conduct research and discovery to identify and crystalize the stakeholder’s mission and extrapolate the project objectives that will define success within their time and budgetary constraints
  • Implement research and discovery data to develop a compelling strategic approach to guide the creative development phase and gain tactical alignment across stakeholder and development teams
  • Lead pitch meetings with confidence and clarity, applying tactful but effective salesmanship to communicate the efficacy and merit of each conceptual approach, as supported by research and strategy
  • Develop a clear, defensible creative vision for each project and direct a multidisciplinary team to align with your perspective and effectively collaborate to achieve your unique vision
  • Clearly capture, visualize and articulate a strong creative vision of how to execute on pitches via director’s treatments, production scripts, manifestoes, mood boards, style frames, outlines and interview questions
  • Maintain constant communication with all stakeholders and team members to ensure a project’s creative trajectory is consistent with the strategy and objectives outlined in the pitch and pivot when needed
  • Foster teamwork and a hands-on, lead-by-example approach to the daily needs of production by rolling up your sleeves and getting into the trenches with members of your team when a project demands it
  • Constantly seeking out opportunities to learn, grow and improve as an artist and creative professional, taking advantage of the many self-improvement and training courses, materials and resources available
  • Challenge other colleagues and collaborators to identify and exploit opportunities to level up their products and processes by introducing and exploring alternative methods and techniques to their craft
  • Communicate effectively with a range of personality types, applying soft skills to inspire collaborative problem-solving in others, resolving conflicts and identifying solutions informed by differing perspectives
  • Develop unique relationships with collaborators, identifying mentorship opportunities and areas where they can develop latent skills and strengths to become more productive, passionate and prolific creators

Professional Experience

Professional experience is a key prerequisite for a Project Director role. VPP is currently seeking candidates with a minimum of five years of experience is in a creative management role. Top candidates are prolific thinkers, seasoned writers, talented presenters, communicative collaborators and technically gifted digital natives with a masterful proficiency with computers and creative desktop publishing tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office. Experience managing a range of creative positions in a content creation pipeline (such as writers, directors, camera operators, lighting/gaffers, editors, producers, motion graphics artists, production designers, art directors and copywriters) is imperative.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Design, Film, Media, Communications, related field or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a Director, Creative Director, Assoc. Creative Director or Creative Manager at a game company, advertising agency, or branded content production company
  • Impressive portfolio featuring a wealth of high-quality, high-impact strategically informed video content for a variety of well-known brands and disparate demographic audiences
  • Experience managing outsource projects from pitch to completion utilizing external agencies and vendors 


  • Gaming industry experience
  • Editorial and/or Directorial experience
  • A passion for Blizzard games and IP’s
  • A passion for video games, animation, movies, graphic novels, comics, books
  • Professional experience as a filmmaker / designer / illustrator / animator / motion graphics artist
  • Knowledge of the business side of the content creation industry
