NoSQL Database Engineer, Cassandra

Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an experienced database engineer to join our Blizzard operations network services (BONS) team in Irvine, California.


  •  Collaborate with development teams on architecture and deployment of NoSQL database systems (predominantly Cassandra)
  • Install, configure, patch, and upgrade database management software (predominantly Cassandra)
  • Design and implement backup solutions and perform recovery testing
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend NoSQL solutions (existing and emerging) and best use cases for them
  • Create and utilize tools to monitor database health
  • Automate tasks where possible (Ansible, Puppet, Python)
  • Coordinate with DBMS vendors for support
  • Conduct functional and stress testing at both the system and database level
  • Produce procedural, knowledge, and troubleshooting documentation
  • Investigate and resolve operational issues
  • 24/7 on-call rotation


  • 1+ years of experience with Cassandra (DataStax distribution preferred)
  • Proficient UNIX/Linux knowledge and skillset
  • Experience working with very large scale production databases
  • Experience working with multiple data centers
  • Strong understanding and practical experience with relational databases
  • Strong understanding in NoSQL theory


  • Previously held role focused on UNIX/Linux Administration
  • Experience with NoSQL implementations in a cloud environment
  • Involvement with Hadoop or Elasticsearch
