Job Description

Reporting directly to the Global Head of Finance Biosimilars and dotted line to the Vice President, US Finance & Operations, the Director of Finance, will lead the finance function for the U.S. Ophthalmology Biosimilar business unit and will be a member of the Biosimilars finance organization. S/he will partner with the Biosimilar Ophthalmology franchise unit head and his/her respective team to provide financial insight and contribute to the development of functional strategy and long-term operational strategy of the business.  By applying broad industry knowledge, financial analysis, and market insight; s/he will drive financial performance of the unit and aim to have the best-in-class launch and continued success of the first Biogen Biosimilar products in the U.S.

This position drives all financial processes including the annual plan, forecasts and strategic plans as well as quarter close and other financial and business analyses. 

 

The ideal candidate will have the ability to strike a balance between supporting the business and challenging assumptions and will have the need to negotiate with senior leaders across the organization.  The role requires both strategic thinking and the ability to manage complex problems in addition to the ability to synthesize these details into the big picture to drive actions across a variety of areas.  The Director Finance will serve as a thought leader and member of the U.S. Ophthalmology Franchise Team Leadership Team.  The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, immensely organized, results-driven individual with executive presence, exceptional communication skills, sound judgment and a ‘can-do’ attitude. 

1.       FINANCIAL PLANNING & FORECASTING: 

Direct all strategic financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, resource allocation and optimization of the Biosimilar business within in the U.S. Provide decision support to senior management for planning and measuring financial results.  Work closely with line management, establish major economic objectives for the business unit and prepare budgets and forecasts of revenue, expenses, and earnings based on past, present and future operations and indicators.  Champion efforts to both support and challenge assumptions, identify business opportunities and proactively manage risks.  Serve as the key resource in assessing and compiling justifications for business investments

2.       FINANCIAL ANALYSIS & REPORTING:  

Drive financial analysis and reporting processes for the business.  Develop, analyze, and interpret financial analytics in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.  Oversee the development of accurate and timely financial and management reports for the business and provide insightful analysis on key business drivers.  Identify risks and opportunities and evaluate financial and strategic alternatives to improve both top line and bottom line results.  Confirm financial statements for accuracy and clarity.  Oversee complete P&L and drive analytic approach to understanding and measuring performance which provides actionable feedback to the franchise leadership, incorporating market and competitive dynamics

3.       OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP: 

Lead and direct all Finance activities within the US BBU Ophthalmology franchise.

As a member of the US Ophthalmology BBU leadership team, contribute to the resolution of complex functional and long-term strategic problems, as well as, the implementation of solutions.

Communicate frequently and effectively with both the local US franchise team as well the Global international teams to ensure alignment and consistency on the strategic direction, decisive action and process.  In addition, ensure correct processes within the US affiliate Finance team on all the back-office Finance responsibilities supporting the US BBU team.

Operate with an enterprising mindset of continuous improvement and best practice sharing, willing to adjust strategy as needed and apply learnings to future opportunities.  Ensure process optimization and ownership.

4.     EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP

Serve as a business partner and financial advisor to business unit leadership in the development and implementation of operational and strategic objectives and plans.  Establish and recommend financial objectives which support business unit strategies and plans.  Provide a sophisticated and robust view of future performance across a range of outcomes, with clearly identified risks and potential inflection points impacting current and future financial and investment decisions.  Assist business franchise leadership in the preparation of capital spending justifications and accountability.  Define and develop high-impact executive communications, including presentations for Executive Committee, Board meetings, and Earnings preparation as well as town halls and other meetings.  Participate in leadership forums, providing P&L and performance insights.  Work cross-functionally and closely with leadership team to form strong and collaborative partnerships with peers and key stakeholders which ensure organization alignment and the achievement of business objectives.  Establish credibility throughout the organization and position self as an effective problem-solver and driver of business growth.

5.     COMPLIANCE: 

Ensure legal and regulatory compliance for the strategic and operational direction of the company.  Establish and maintain systems and controls which verify the integrity of all processes, procedures and data, and enhance the company’s value.  Communicate and monitor compliance with financial policies and reporting requirements.

Qualifications

·          12+ years of broad financial experience within the life sciences industry.

·          Financial planning and analysis experience and P&L accountability encompassing accounting, modeling, budgets and forecasting which drive decision-making. 

·          Experience supporting U.S. commercial functions is ideal.

·          Demonstrated leadership skills, proven ability to effectively engage, inspire, motivate and achieve results through others.

·          Proven business partnering including the executive maturity and awareness to achieve the appropriate balance between supporting and challenging the business.  

·          Demonstrated competence in thinking strategically, analytically, conceptually and innovatively.  Excellent project management, time management and decision-making abilities.  Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, rapidly changing priorities and thrive in an intense, fast-paced environment.  Attention to detail, strong organizational and follow-up skills. 

Education:

·          Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Business-related field; MBA or CPA strongly preferred.

·          Thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical / biopharma industry.  Working knowledge of the scientific drug development process, including key functional areas, legal, regulatory and commercial concepts.
