Benchling is hiring a Business Development Lead for its Strategy team, who will be responsible for strategic deals encompassing product and technical partnerships, third party platform relationships, and acquisitions/investments. We are looking for an entrepreneurial individual to grow this nascent mechanism to execute on our strategy, develop a deep understanding of the external environment, and identify and execute on deals. The successful candidate will demonstrate structured thinking, exceptional communication skills, excitement for forging new relationships, and a true partnership mindset that delivers positive sum deals. The Business Development Lead will regularly collaborate with executive leadership, product, finance, and all of our go-to-market (GTM) functions to help the organization execute on its strategy.

The ideal candidate will have experience in or across the following areas: corporate development, business development, or corporate strategy in a high tech company. Exposure to life sciences is helpful but not required.


  • Establish strategic deals, inclusive of product/technical partnerships, acquisitions, and investments, as a mechanism to execute on our strategy and accelerate our mission
  • Work alongside Corporate Strategy and Product to establish the highest priority markets for Benchling in pursuit of our long-term vision
  • For high priority markets:
    • Create and refresh roadmaps for high priority markets, encompassing strategic rationale for deals, market landscape, and high value opportunities
    • Identify and meet potential partners in priority markets, partnering with Product and Strategy as applicable
    • Make recommendations on deal approach (do nothing versus buy versus partner versus invest)
    • Serve as the deal lead on a cross-functional team (Product, GTM, Finance, Legal as applicable), establishing deal structure and key terms and leading negotiations
    • Build an initial plan to scale or integrate deals based upon structure, including designing success criteria
  • For third party platform:
    • Develop and foster relationships with key third parties for Benchling’s platform and third-party enablement efforts
    • Understand key partner needs, develop the platform value proposition, establish a nascent partner program, and drive efforts to bring partners onboard
    • Align with platform roadmap and category priorities, executing deals with partners to support launch efforts
    • Establish path from bespoke deals with early launch partners to uniform deals across all partners
  • Regularly present to Benchling leadership across Product, Engineering, Sales, and Finance on the external environment in high priority areas and on the status of in-flight opportunities


  • 7-10+ years of combined experience working in/across corporate development, business development, corporate strategy, investment banking, and/or venture capital
  • Direct deal experience across partnerships, acquisitions, and/or investments, including writing partnership agreements and ensuring success of partnerships
  • Possess a product-centric view of problem solving and an understanding of commercialization/go-to-market in software companies (GTM)
  • Deep curiosity about life sciences, our customers, and our markets
  • Express generative and creative thinking, especially around structure and getting to positive sum outcomes
  • Think in frameworks and first principles; comfortable explaining the “why” behind your thinking
  • Communicate clearly across all mediums, especially written
  • Extremely high attention to detail
  • Prioritize well and move easily between long-term projects and short-term deal sprints
  • Invest in building reusable processes and work products
