Packaging Engineer Intern (Co-op Program) - Redwood City, CA
Balsam Brands is seeking a Packaging Engineer student for our Redwood City, CA warehouse location. This position is responsible for providing engineering support and perspective to the sourcing department in developing product packaging. During this internship you will develop skills critical in assisting with product development. You will support various packaging materials projects and interact cross-functionally with the warehouse operations team, among others. You will assist with package and product testing, respond to packaging inquiries and document all new packaging products. You will have an opportunity to learn and contribute through teamwork with others. This position reports to the VP of Operations with close collaboration with the company CEO. This is a six-month internship starting in either January or June 2017.
Is a Junior student at a 4-year Packaging program
Related experience/course work in packaging design and engineering
What you’ll do:
Identify packaging issues, assist others in researching, analyzing, recommending changes to new or complex packaging challenges
Communicate and interpret packaging changes to employees and supervisors through written and verbal communication methods
Regularly use active listening skills to identify and respond to other’s needs
Thoroughly understand basic packaging principles; recognize more advanced flaws or potential issues
Gather critical requirements and research product alternatives
Gives input into annual planning and changes to the plan throughout the
Work cross-functionally to optimize packaging design
Problem solve using root cause analysis techniques
What you bring to the table:
Solid understanding of packaging test methods (ISTA and ASTM standards) as well as packaging's impact on cost drivers for product and shipping
Fluent in Solidworks or AutoCAD, including modeling techniques for packaging
Strong engineering aptitude with good hands-on skills
Knowledge of graphic design fundamentals
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to management and cross-functional team members
Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment
Ability to work independently and organize/prioritize job assignments and tasks within and outside of one’s function
Ability to take feedback as a learning opportunity
Strong analytical skills Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Location: The coop will be based in Redwood City, CA.
Notes: This is a six month internship with the potential for a full-time offer after graduation. The internship could be part-time (20 hours per week) or full-time (40 hour per week). The full-time, permanent position will be located in Redwood City, CA with the opportunity to relocate to Boise, ID after 1-2 years.
Travel requirements: This position will include some travel to warehouse partners (CA-based) as well as to the Boise-based corporate office. There will be opportunity for overseas travel in the full-time permanent position.
Housing: Balsam Brands will assist in covering a portion of housing costs for the duration of the internship. We will also provide up to $500 in tuition reimbursement per semester for the internship.
