Solutions Architect

Job Description

BAE Systems is currently seeking a Solution Architect that will serve as the competency lead for C4ISR systems integration, combat systems, enterprise IT systems, and as the lead engineering design authority (DA) for acquisitions conducted by our customers across the Army, Navy, and Federal Civilian markets to develop both enterprise-wide strategies as well as the point solutions for full lifecycle systems engineering and integration, network engineering, information technology, and operations and sustainment requirements for major captures and proposals. Working closely with business development, customers, and diverse engineering and proposal teams, the SA will understand emerging and evolving customer mission needs and most important requirements and develop discriminating, winning, tailored solutions aligned to the capture strategy for the opportunities. This position will also lead key internal research and development (IRAD) and strategic investment efforts to enable and to improve the business area's ability to deliver state-of-the-art C4ISR integration and enterprise IT service solutions to its customers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Act as the lead solutions architect and the lead technical writer for key proposals and captures and develop discriminating and wining technical and business solutions
  • Lead strategic investments and develop next-generation technologies and methodologies in C4ISR weapon systems integration, network engineering, cloud, and cybersecurity
  • Develop white papers, RFI responses, and technical presentations to engage customers and to shape business development opportunities
  • Develop technology roadmaps to support business growth strategy
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in these technical area and as a technology advisor to the business area chief engineer and the line leaders
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert responsible for assessing, recommending and implementing solutions to support business development, captures and proposals
  • Provide technical support to the business area management, programs, and their customers in solving challenging technical issues emerging during contract execution

In these capacities, specifically, the SA will be required to
  • Develop solutions in terms of contextual, conceptual and logical architectures using standards-based, rigorous methodologies and practices
  • Conduct technology and architecture trade studies by applying proven analysis of alternatives (AoA) methodologies
  • Be the lead proposal writers for technical, management, cost, and/or past performance volumes
  • Develop cost estimates and basis of estimates (BOE) based on industry-accepted methodologies
  • Develop lifecycle cost models to support architecture decision trades
  • Develop proof-of-concept models and prototypes, and conduct internal and external demonstrations
  • Develop technical approach and project engineering plans, including tasks, process and critical resources, to turn the solution into a successful proposal
  • Communicate solutions directly with customers, management, and teaming partners, including oral presentations, white papers, and RFI responses
  • Support IDS Chief Engineer with respect to process improvement, technology initiatives, and investment planning in support of annual IBP process
  • Serves as an I&S representative on industry forums and in discussions with industry leading product and technology partners and OEM's
Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor Degree in appropriate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Computer Sciences) and a minimum of 15 years of work experience, including 5+ years of C4ISR systems engineering and Integration, cybersecurity, and/or enterprise IT experience.

Required Skills
  • Strong ability to think strategically and communicate effectively at the most senior levels of government (customer) or corporate management (company) to articulate the understanding of their mission needs and requirements, and to communicate the value and benefit of BAE Systems solutions
  • Experience leading technical solution development, in particular, architecture and CONOPS development using leading systems engineering methodologies including architecture frameworks, SysML or UML, for software-intensive system integration, support, maintenance, and sustainment
  • Experience in supporting large-scale proposal efforts comprising a diverse team of technical and operational specialists, and in writing major proposal volumes involving the development of novel or innovative new solutions
  • Experience with Cybersecurity and Information Assurance
  • Experience with modern distributed system architectures, including web services
  • Experience with virtualization technologies from any vendor (Microsoft, Amazon, VMware, Citrix, Xen or KVM)
  • Strong knowledge of architecture, design, and system engineering of enterprise systems
  • Experience and knowledge of systems engineering, system development methodologies including requirement engineering, configuration management, technical baseline management, cost estimating and analysis, and decision support methodologies
  • Knowledge and understanding of industrial engineering, production and manufacturing, and supply chain systems
  • Experience collaborating across organizations and OEM vendors, participating in industry forums and conferences, writing and presenting technical papers


Preferred Skills and Education

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure platform, including machine image, networking, load balancing, and storage components; Microsoft Cloud Solutions Expert (MCSE): Cloud Platform and Infrastructure is highly preferred
  • Experience with scripting in any form (Batch, Bash, PowerShell, Python, or other); demonstrable knowledge of XML and JSON
  • Experience with PowerShell, Python, or C#
  • Experience in software development and familiarity with Agile software development methods
  • Expertise and knowledge in enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., DoDAF, Zachman)
  • Experience and knowledge in cost estimating and analysis methodologies
  • Knowledge and experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Enterprise Resource Management (ERP) systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management methodologies, including scope, cost and schedule, and resource management
  • Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP)
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • ITIL Certification
  • Master's Degree (Preferred in appropriate discipline)
