Job Description

BAE Systems is seeking a Senior Principal Laser Architect/Engineer to join our team in Merrimack, NH.

This candidate will be working with the Hardware Engineering Lasers Capability Group team to work on the expanding portfolio of laser based electro-optic programs. These engineers will be responsible for the design, development, manufacture, and test of complex laser systems operating in the UV/VIS/IR regions under stressing military and aerospace environments. Candidates must have design and hands on experience in multiple laser technologies including but not limited to: semiconductor lasers, QCLs, fiber lasers, solid state lasers, non-linear optical materials and devices, optical benches, and beam directors.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work well in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment to define and analyze subsystem performance specifications and to ensure compliance to these specifications in operational environments. The candidate must be capable of conducting system performance trades and manage risk elements to ensure maximum cost effectiveness and optimal system design performance. Ideally, the candidates will have experience with cost and schedule estimating, and technical aspects of developing laser and laser based products to support proposal efforts. The candidate shall have strong written and oral presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate with program management, customers, and senior engineering leadership.

As a member of the Laser capability group the candidate will be focused on teamwork and have the ability to productively resolve conflicts on the team. Candidates must be able to interact well with program management and customers. The ideal candidate will be capable of developing advanced concepts, techniques, and standards. Candidates will be expected to develop solutions to problems of unusual complexity which require a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovativeness. Challenges faced by the candidates are frequently unique and complex.

Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to lead small teams. Candidates will be responsible for the day to day activities of the laser/optical engineering teams on a program. As part of this oversight, candidates will be expected to provide effective mentoring for laser/optical team members to grow the leadership and capabilities of team members.

Typical Education & Experience

Bachelor's Degree and 12 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

  • B.S. in Physics, Optical Engineering, or equivalent with 8+ years of experience working with laser/optical systems.
  • M.S. in Physics, Optical Engineering, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Secret security clearance/eligibility
Preferred Skills and Education
  • Knowledge and practical experience with laser systems is required.
  • Experience with transitioning laser systems into a production environment is strongly desired.
  • Previous engineering leadership experience is required.
