Piping Designer Group Lead

BAE Systems is hiring a Piping Design Group Lead to provide expert functional direction to the Piping Design Group. The individual selected will be responsible for the direction and leadership of the Piping Group while working under general supervision of the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Manager. The Group Lead will support program design assignments 80-90% of the time and support the functional organization 10-20% of the time.

You have the ability to impact your team and the programs they support. This work requires extensive, progressive experience in moderately complex mechanical/piping assignments and involves applying advanced design techniques and analysis for the design, construction, and maintenance of chemical plant facilities and infrastructure. The Group Lead will be a highly motivated, ethical representative of BAE Systems.

Specific areas of responsibility include:
  • Supervise and lead work activities of piping designers to support modernization projects performed in-house or by third-party designers/firms
  • Plan and manage project workload and review performance to ensure efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff
  • Assign and track tasks and collect metrics on performance
  • Assume PeopleSoft responsibility for direct reports assigned to your supervision
  • Review, verify, and approve timecards
  • Complete employee performance reviews and salary planning in conjunction with the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Manager
  • Recruit and conduct interviews of candidates
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems
  • Pro-actively partner and cooperate with other engineering disciplines to promote a collaborative design environment in a 3D integrated design system
  • Serve as the technical advisor and provide senior-level input and evaluation of P&IDs, design layout, and piping isometric and orthographic drawings
  • Lead and perform quality review checks for 3D modeling and piping deliverables
  • Develop and advance group tools and work flows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution
  • Interpret, establish, and refine policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards of the group
  • Perform field design work to ascertain current conditions, locate existing and new systems, coordinate with subcontract personnel during construction
  • Assist in the generation of project proposals, scopes of work, and schedules
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and supplier bid evaluations
  • Develop man-hour estimates for piping discipline
  • Ensure safety policies and procedures are properly integrated into designs
  • Recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly
  • All other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Education
  • Associate's Degree with emphasis in engineering drafting/design and 8 years related professional experience in piping engineering and design within the process, chemical, refining, and chemical industry including equipment layout, piping design, and pipe support design or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Minimum of 6 years 3D piping design experience (CAD) in positions of increasing responsibility
  • Minimum of 5 years Design Management with demonstrated experience leading a piping group including demonstrated experience in advancing processes and procedures to ensure complete and correct piping drawings for use by both internal and external suppliers
  • 5+ years piping construction management experience specifically related to chemical process and steam and gas piping
  • Ability to interface with site operations and maintenance teams
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines
  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change
  • Understanding of work flow and information flow between disciplines
  • Knowledge of industry-standard checking procedures
  • Knowledge and application of industry-standard construction practices including how those practices drive design intent
  • Knowledge and application of piping materials, design standards, and codes
  • Knowledge and application of piping supports and restraints
  • Knowledge and application of flexibility analysis of piping systems
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Field experience including as-built drawings and start-up/commissioning support
  • Capable of creating required engineering documentation using Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, and Access
Preferred Skills and Education
  • 15+ years related professional experience in piping engineering and design within the process, chemical, refining, and chemical industry including equipment layout, piping design, and pipe support design
  • 10+ years 3D piping design experience in positions of increasing responsibility
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from accredited university
  • Professional engineer license
  • AutoCAD Plant 3D or SmartPlant 3D software experience
