Hazardous Material Handler

Job Description

General Summary Performs activities required to operate and maintain waste accumulation areas and waste storage areas in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including but not limited to the movement and storage of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, proper handling and labeling of waste materials, and collection of samples to be tested. Principal Duties and Responsibilities 1. Must have the knowledge and skill to monitor and maintain hazardous and non-hazardous waste containerization, which includes the use of the proper container and assuring proper mixing of various compatible waste streams. 2. Must have the knowledge and the ability to properly label waste drums and record pertinent information on environmental logs to trace waste from its origin to disposal. 3. Must have the knowledge and ability to safely pull samples from waste generation points for proper disposal and characterization of waste streams. 4. Must be able to accurately complete all hazardous and non-hazardous waste manifests for shipping purposes. 5. Must have the ability and skill to operate various pieces of equipment to transport waste, e.g. forklift, jib cranes. 6. Must load hazardous and non-hazardous drums and containers for shipment. 7. Performs spill/leak cleanup activities. 8. Performs "First Responder" activities to spills and cyanide alerts and maintains files on waste disposal activities and waste profile analysis. 9. Responsible for supporting waste minimization activities to include recycling activities and tracking waste streams. Maintains entries in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) log. 10. Performs employee "Right To Know" training to employees. 11. Employee is responsible for maintaining/improving housekeeping standards in the work area and adhering to established safety rules and practices.

Required Skills and Education

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Knowledgeable of the hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals including proper container and mixing of various compatible waste streams.
2. Proficient in the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) log, waste disposal activities, waste profile analysis, "Right To Know" training and established safety rules and practices.
3. A high level of attention to detail is required when dealing with hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
4. A high level of communication skill is required, e.g. effectively conduct training sessions.

Physical Demands
The work requires employee to stand for long periods, stoop, bend, reach, and climb. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Occasionally lifts objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Cranes, hand trucks, and other lifting and moving equipment are available for heavier loads.
