Handyperson 2nd Class (Rigging)

Job Description

Position Summary:

Handypersons help and assist mechanics with their key roles and responsibilities. Handypersons are expected to have an intermediary knowledge of key roles and responsibilities as well as functional knowledge specific to their trade. Handypersons must also have demonstrated the ability to perform all tasks of Handyperson (2nd & 3rd), Helper (1st & 2nd) and show a desire to learn new tasks.

Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge:

Performance Related

  • Proven ability to perform tasks of Handyperson 2nd and 3rd, and helper
  • 12 months without any written warnings for rules violation
  • Must have a good performance evaluation
  • Able to report to work on time each day and have good attendance record
  • Able to work overtime when required
  • Able to work with others and in a team
  • Demonstrate improved trade skills

Process/Procedure related
  • Ability to comprehend processes and procedures
  • Able to understand and follow safety rules
  • Have a working understanding of Tag Out and Lock Tag out programs
  • Know and understand basic math
  • Able to read and write
  • Accomplish assigned tasks under moderate supervision
  • Have a working knowledge of the WAF (Work Authorization Forms) and its process
  • Have a basic understand of functional theory - based on assigned trade
  • Equipment Related
  • Work with shop equipment / maintenance of equipment
  • Acquire a personal hand tool collection
  • Must have general knowledge and can demonstrate use of hand tools
  • Able to work around heavy equipment
  • Knowledgeable regarding uses of pneumatic, hydraulic and electric power tools
  • Independently operate small equipment
  • Help with maintenance on equipment
  • Operate machinery using good judgment/operator skills
Anchor Chain
  • Properly make metal tags
  • Transport - load/unload - trailers/pallets
Wheels (Hubs/Blades/CCP System):
  • Assist with proper sling/grommet hook up - hull
  • Transport hub - trailer/boom dolly
Shafting - dry-dock related
  • Assist with the method of removal - pad eye placement - select gear
  • Assist with shaft transporting - trailer/boom dolly
Assist with Deck Machinery (Cranes/Cargo Booms) tasks
  • Wires - remove/reeve system/blocks
  • Booms - [ABS quadrennial] remove/install [proper method/gear]
  • Blocks - remove/reinstall [ABS quadrennial]
  • Testing - set up, [Navy Test] [ABS Test]
  • B&A Crane - remove/reeve wire ropes
  • B&A Crane - boom removal [method/select gear/block/transport]
  • B&A Crane - testing [set up, test]
  • Must possess knowledge and experience with electronic equipment the procedure/inspection sheet for: all CIC sensitive, all computers, all circuit breakers, all ac units, all cooling coils, all laundry and all galley equipment.
  • Must possess knowledge and experience with staging procedures and proper building practices for the QES/Burke
  • Possess knowledge and have experience with steel repair work and/or piping work
  • Assist with dock related work to include: blocking, docking/undocking, mooring ships, and gangways/platforms
  • Assist with hook on for the ship/pier
Required Skills and Education

Minimum education: High school diploma/GED
Minimum relevant experience: 1 yr. to 1.5 yrs.

Other Requirements:
  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
  • Must be able to use specified tools required tools as determined by the shop management
  • Maintain job site cleanliness
  • Ability to work in confined Space Entry
  • Able to work at heights (if applicable to trade)
  • Be able to work off scaffolding (if applicable to trade)
  • Able to work with hands
  • Ability to walk, stand, long periods at a time
  • Able to wear the required PPE
  • Basic material identification skills
  • Make measurements to 1/16" using measuring tape or ruler
  • Basic blueprint reading (Excludes labor shop)
  • Assist with troubleshooting and issue resolution as required
  • Must be able to obtain a government access badge
