GBSD Senior Modeling and Simulation Engineer

Job Description

For the past 50 years, the United States Air Force has operated the Minute Man III (MMIII) Intercontinental Ballistic Missile system (ICBM) as the land based component to America's nuclear triad. Recently, the congress of the United States has approved the Air Force to investigate the next generation ICBM system, which is commonly referred to as the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD). As the Integration Support Contractor, BAE Systems is executing the critical role of Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance to the Air Force in the development of the GBSD system. Our customer is the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) Program Office located at Hill AFB, north of Salt Lake City, Utah. This will be a long term project with the weapon system anticipated to remain operational until 2075. BAE Systems is assisting the Air Force in the determination and evaluation GBSD Weapon System using modeling, simulation, and analysis. We are looking for engineers with backgrounds in Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis methods and techniques. The candidates should be capable of obtaining a clearance at a DoD or a DOE level clearnace. Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

BAE Systems is looking for employees that either have some of the following skills or who have a proven ability to quickly learn the following skills:

  • Bachelors degree in mathematics, physics or engineering with 7 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to both develop new model components and integrate existing models components within an overall 6DOF simulation framework. Candidate should be familiar with typical elements of strategic missile simulation (aerodynamics, geodetics, gravity, propulsion, TVC, guidance law, sensors, etc). Candidate will perform modeling and simulation of air vehicle trajectories and perform corresponding trade studies.
  • A background or practical coding experience in modern development languages such as Java, C++, or C#.
  • A general background or familiarity with test engineering practices
  • Ability to work within a flexible team environment and be expected to take ownership of assigned tasks and see them through to successful completion with limited direction and guidance.
  • Capable of continuous learning
  • Ability to communicate with government customers as well as fellow engineers, program leadership, team members, and end users. Must develop a clear understanding of program goals and objectives and shape work activities to satisfy them. Must present both verbal and written status on a regular basis, and prepare progress briefings and technical reports as required.
  • Comfortable working in fields outside of their traditional training


  • Preferred Skills and Education


  • Candidates with an M.S. or Ph.D. in related fields of engineering or physics will be considered favorable for this position.
  • Familiarity with ICBM systems
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Programming experience with languages such as Fortran, C++, Python, Matlab, and hydrocodes

  • Experience with ICBM 6DOF Flight Simulations.
  • Statistical systems analysis
  • Positive professional experience with DoD entities such as DTRA, Air Force Global Strike Command, U.S. Strategic Command or DOE Laboratories
  • US DoD Security Clearance.
