Engineer - Mechanical, Sr Level - Towed Systems
Seeking candidates for proposal due to be released on or about 1Q 2018.
BAE Systems in Middletown, RI, is seeking a full-time Sr. Mechanical Engineer to provide field and production engineering plus technical support to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center's Division Newport Naval Array Technical Support Center (NATSC). The selected candidate will be interfacing with our primary customer, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island. The selected candidate will:
Perform field and production engineering plus technical support for US Navy and FMS tactical and Surveillance towed array systems used on submarines and surface combatants.
Monitor preparation and operation land-based test facility equipment used to verify mechanical performance of towed array systems, tow cables, modules , and individual sensors, Terminated Module Hose Assemblies, Tow Cable Assemblies, Internal Strength member Assemblies in accordance with approved test procedures,
Review/analyze recorded data and measurements; investigate recorded problems, determine if complexity requires resolution at a higher level, and prepare test reports.
Monitor setup and operation of special purpose Module Booting and filling equipment used to assemble wiring harnesses and individual sensors/telemetry system components into towed array modules.
Review, monitor and update technical and engineering product changes in accordance with customer CM requirements.
Review and comment on PECP/ECP packages to determine what impacts, if any, these packages will have on repair times, production throughput, product quality.
Perform failure analysis and prepare reports identifying root cause failure modes, mechanisms and parts that failed; as well as recommendations
Review, monitor and update production line repair processes/procedures to reflect approved changes to technical and engineering products in accordance with customer CM requirements.
Coordinate with engineers, technicians, and other NATSC program professionals to obtain additional information or to interpret policies and procedures for reporting design changes.
Prepare and operate test equipment; review/analyze recorded data and measurements; investigate recorded problems, determine if complexity requires resolution at a higher level, and prepare test reports.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 4 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
Typical education and relevant years of experience: Bachelor's Degree, in Engineering (preferably Mechanical), a hard science or technical discipline and at least 4 years of relevant/related experience. Must have experience working in an ISO 9001 QA environment following Process documents (procedures, work instructions, test instructions, travelers, drawings, etc.).
Security clearance requirement: Active DoD Secret security clearance.
Additional experience/skills required:
Experience using general purpose mechanical inspection/ test equipment including micrometers, strain gages/analyzers, pressure test/measurement facilities/instrumentation in Towed Array handling facilities.
Experience with manufacture tow cables, hose assemblies, and towed array cable/harness assemblies in accordance with applicable Work Instructions.
Experience in preparation and operation of land-based test facility equipment used to verify mechanical performance of towed array systems, tow cables, modules, individual sensors, terminated module hose assemblies, tow cable assemblies, Internal Strength member assemblies in accordance with approved test procedures.
Experience in setup and operation of special purpose Module Booting and filling equipment used to assemble wiring harnesses and individual sensors/telemetry system components into towed array modules.
Experience in review/analysis of recorded data and measurements; investigate recorded problems, determine if complexity requires resolution at a higher level, and prepare test reports.
Experience in determining repairs and preventative maintenance required for land based test facility equipment in accordance with approved Preventative Maintenance documents.
Experience in evaluating the material condition of submarine and surface combatant towed systems arrays, modules, components and associated handling equipment and implementing corrective action.
Experience with hose and internal strength member termination on modules and associated tooling.
Experience writing, validating, and updating test procedures, installation procedures, component specifications.
Ability to initiate, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously Ability to operate independently and proactively Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).
Experience working in a culture promoting workplace safety, environmental, and Hazardous Materials Control compliance including familiarity with OSHA regulations.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Skills and Education
Highly desired, but not required:
Experience supporting submarine related Towed Array (TA) and Towed Array Handling Systems (TAHS).
Experience participating in towed array Integrated Product Teams, or Failure Review Boards, or identification of training/certification requirements for technicians working on towed array multiple product lines.
Engineering experience in the operation, maintenance, installation, test and/or repair of submarine electrical , electro-mechanical, and or electronic systems/equipment.
Experience and/or training related to U.S. Navy towed array operation, telemetry systems, acoustic and non acoustic sensors, electrical/optical conversion, electrical power regulation, and power and data paths.
Familiarity with Submarine Towed Arrays and tow cables including TB-16 (All variants) TB-29, TB-29A (All Variants) TB-34, TB-23; Surface Towed Arrays (Tactical): AN/SQR-18, AN/SQR-19, TB-37 Multi-Function Towed Array (MFTA); Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System (SURTASS): A180R (JAOS) (all variants).TL-29A Twin Line and associated array/module test sets
Experience working at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport using the Master Control and Towed Array Management System (TAMS) data management environments.
Experience preparing/reviewing proposed PECP/ECP packages in accordance with the PEO-SUB PMS4011/4013-Configuration Control Manual (CCM), including any preliminary test data and analysis that supports the requested change's technical feasibility as well as alternative part test results and recommendations and identification of what impacts ( if any) these packages will have on repair times, production throughput, product quality, and parts inventories.
Experience performing diagnostic trouble-shooting on submarine or surface ship towed array assets and components (including in-service assets), performing Failure Mode Analysis (FMA) and reviewing/preparing failure analysis reports identifying root cause failure modes, mechanisms and parts that failed; as well as recommendations corrective actions.
Familiarity with towed sonar array general construction and fabrication techniques.
Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using Solidworks and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
Significant technical experience in the design, installation, test, and/or repair of mechanical/electrical/electronic systems/equipment.
Experience using Matlab, Labview, Solidworks, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office software.
