BAE Systems Platforms and Services is seeking an Associate Materials Engineer within the Advanced Materials and Joining Technologies team in the Combat Vehicles Engineering Organization
The candidate will have an MS Degree in Materials Engineering and will work in a team environment along with other technical disciplines to identify and specify the appropriate materials, processes and coatings for metallic materials used on Combat Vehicles. The position is located in the engineering facility and primarily working with new vehicle designs. This will entail working with other engineering disciplines to review design drawings and ensure that appropriate materials, coatings, processes, and corrosion protection coatings are specified. The job responsibilities include selecting the appropriate materials considering cost, availability, producibility, weldability and other factors that may impact the manufacturability of the component or system. This entails familiarity with engineering drawings as well as computer aided design programs and ability to work with standard office software. The candidate should be able to apply principles of chemistry, physics and material behavior to develop metallic materials and coating process specifications, and fabrication and joining processes that will meet the mechanical load and life cycle requirements of the system. Also, importantly, the job requires consideration of the environmental impact of the materials during manufacture, processing and application in the field. Other job responsibilities include applying material property design allowables and specification requirements to the stress analysis of system components. The job entails working with the metallurgical laboratory technicians to perform failure analyses of parts returned from testing or the field using metallurgical techniques such as macroscopic examination, documentation, metallographic techniques, scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing determine the root cause of failure.
