Dynamometer Test Facility Manager

The Sterling Heights Dynamometer Test Facility Manager (DTFM) will be responsible for the commissioning, implementation, marketing and daily operation of a new dynamometer and power electronics development and test capability at the BAE Sterling Heights, Michigan site. The DTFM will be initially responsibility for supporting the construction and commissioning of the facility. The candidate will interact with construction contractors, facilities, safety, engineering, and site senior leadership. Once the facility is commissioned for operation, the DTFM will be responsible for daily lab operations, managing annual expense and capital budgets and overall profit and loss (P&L) of the lab. The DTFM will also support daily operations by directing and supervising other staff, performing test operations directly as well as developing and maintaining facility engineering protocols.

The DTFM shall develop, implement, and manage integration & test project plans to include detailed task definition, lab resource requirements, lab schedules, quality, and cost parameters. The DTFM shall also prepare, monitor, and control lab budgets and schedules, and provide recurring reports to leadership. The DTFM shall maintain calibration and maintenance logs for the facility and coordinate execution of preventive maintenance and recurring certifications.

The DTFM must have demonstrated proficiency with integrating and testing of Hybrid Electric Drive (HED) Vehicles and HED hardware used in military and/or commercial vehicle applications. Experience with integrating and testing of high power electronics, DC-DC / DC-AC power conversion topologies, embedded motor controllers (hardware and software), advanced chemistry Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and fundamentals of synchronous and asynchronous multiphase AC motors is also required. Experience integrating and testing power train components (engines, transmissions, cooling system) used in automotive or military platforms is highly desired. The DTFM should have demonstrated fluency with military or commercial power quality standards, EMI/EMC standards, as well as mechanical and dynamometer testing requirements and standards.

The DTFM will plan and manage internal and external resources ensuring all project obligations and objectives are met. This includes adjusting staffing resources for the lab to meet demand, providing direct project leadership (if required), and anticipating and resolving internal and external stakeholder conflicts.

The DTFM will interact with internal and external customers to promote the capabilities on the Sterling Heights Dynamometer Facility to gain new business. The DTFM may periodically prepare input for technical proposals including concept definition, technical specifications, definitions, and associated costs. The DTFM must be able to prepare, present, and defend technical results and recommendations to external customers and internal management. The DTFM will participates in formal technical reviews with customers and internal technical reviews with peers and subordinates.

The DTFM shall champion a safe work environment, ensure compliance with safety objectives, and always maintain compliance with BAE Systems’ policies and procedures as well as OSHA safety standards. The candidate must have a deep working knowledge, appreciation (and act as an ambassador) for high voltage (HV) safety.

Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experience Required Skills and Education · Working knowledge of lab test equipment including Power Supplies, load banks, thermal chambers, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and sensors.

  • Working knowledge of mechanical test equipment such as high power dynamometers, rotating drivelines, gear systems and related hydraulic systems.
  • Working knowledge in developing and maintaining National Instruments Lab View Based Test equipment.
  • Experience with design/test of electromechanical systems, with a solid understanding of power electronics, cooling systems, power train, and electric motor design and control basics.
  • Experience with data collection / acquisition, sensor technology and data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • BS degree in EE/ME or equivalent.

Preferred Skills and Education – Demonstrated proficiency with testing of Hybrid Electric Drive (HED) Vehicles used in military and/or commercial vehicle applications is highly desired.

  • Expert at problem identification, reporting, and resolution. Applies structured root cause analysis methods to solving problems.
  • Prior experience with running high power dynamometers used for automotive and HED applications.
  • OSHA-10 Certification.
  • Familiarity with Capital Expenditure process.
  • Experience with CAN bus and Ethernet communication busses.
  • Project Management Experience
  • MS degree in EE/ME or equivalent.
