Director External Communications

Job Description

The Director, External Communications is responsible for the planning and execution of external communications strategies, programs and tactics that promote and enhance the reputation, capabilities and successes of a leading global defense business. The position will develop an understanding of the strategic direction of BAE Systems; the company's priority programs and captures; and the respective competitive environment, and knowledge of key customers and industry issues. This knowledge is translated into strategic and tactical plans that advance the awareness and understanding of the company's priority programs, value proposition, and reputation. The role is directly responsible for the development and implementation of digital communications and media relations strategies, reporting to the Vice President, External Communications.

Key Responsibilities:
Proactively drive and manage the BAE Systems, Inc. enterprise-wide narrative and storytelling process including the development and oversight of the 12-month narrative calendar that includes all external, internal, marketing, digital and corporate social responsibility initiatives by the Company and its business sectors. Manages and convenes the monthly narrative storytelling meetings with cross-functional representation from the headquarters' Communications teams and all three business sectors.

Establishes and maintains proactive and beneficial media relations with defense, security, services, aerospace and trade media, and top-tier business and regional news media. Leverages these relationships to generate positive articles about BAE Systems' competitive discriminators, technology prowess and expertise. Maintains Q&A documents, develops talking points and drafts briefing materials to support media engagement.

Oversees quality of external communications content and manages the public release approval process for news releases and other key collateral and content intended to drive external engagement. Ensures relevant information is distributed to key audiences through a newswire service, baesystems.com, and social media.

Supervises the program (and vendors) responsible for monitoring the company, industry, and competitor online news coverage and develops analytical measurement program to gauge effectiveness of external communications activities.

Lead all corporate social media strategy for BAE Systems, Inc. through execution of paid and organic social media strategies that are strategically aligned to business objectives and top priorities. Strategic actions will enhance BAE Systems' digital and social media presence to boost engagement with key stakeholders, grow followers, and utilize employees as digital advocates on social media to amplify the BAE Systems' narrative.
• Drives employee digital advocacy program to amplify the reach of the Company's narrative and enhance employee engagement
• Increases number of strategic paid social media campaigns and promoted content through enhanced cross-functional collaboration and socialization efforts
• Delivers social media content in conjunction with the talent acquisition team to strengthen of BAE Systems' recruitment brand
• Launches formal digital thought-leadership program for executive engagement
• Matures organizational social media operating model and creates a broad team of content curators throughout the enterprise, while preserving governance.

Responsible for the oversight of the team managing the implementation of the social media content strategy and day-to-day management, monitoring and engagement on the Company's official social media channels.

Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

Bachelor's degree with 12 years of related experience or equivalent.
Degree in Journalism, Communications, or Marketing

Preferred Skills and Education

Master's degree
