Chief Technologist – Electromagnetic (EM) Railguns

BAE Systems is seeking a highly experienced candidate to fill the role of Chief Technologist on a complex and challenging major development program for the U.S. Department of Defense. The Chief Technologist is a member of the Program Leadership Team and is responsible for establishing technical requirements and the successful development of the overall technical solution.

This role will participate in the development and evaluation phases of the program life cycle by providing technical leadership across development teams in industry and Government. Responsibilities and scope also include:

  • Leading the maintenance of the CONOPS for systems proposed for development
  • Providing cross-IPT technical leadership and coordination
  • Identifying, selecting, and developing key technologies and designs for incorporation into product offerings
  • Providing leadership and support to enterprise system demonstrations with testing
  • Participating in program readiness assessments and design reviews
  • Attend/lead technical interchange meetings with the team members and other program personnel and represent the organization in technical matters pertaining to the project
  • Providing technical consultation and advice to Program Management
  • Operate under minimal supervision; guidance received relates primarily to general objectives Minimum Education and Experience Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics. and 10yrs experience Required Skills and Education
  • Significant expertise in the development of EM railguns through the requirements, development, and testing phases as a leader in two or more of the following competencies:

o Scientific principles of railgun operation, including analytical foundation

o Design and development of large caliber gun systems

o Design and development of Pulsed Power Systems

o System of Systems Integration; naval ships and/or air defense platforms

o Test and Evaluation of EM railguns

  • Experience developing a technical baseline (requirements/architecture) and leading a development team to implementation
  • Experience leading technical Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) or Trade Studies
  • Experience in systems engineering, architecture development, of software intensive systems
  • Experience in applying technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques to solve problems
  • Experience in conducting CONOPS development, analytical, and trade study activities using structured systems engineering techniques
  • Experience in risk and opportunity analysis, tracking and mitigation
  • Experience in the execution of DoD programs; ability to obtain Secret or higher levels of security clearance
  • Demonstrated excellence in communications with customers, project partner organizations, engineers, and management
  • Experience at technical interchange meetings with the team members and other program personnel, and representing the organization in technical matters
  • Experience establishing and maintaining working relationship with all levels of the organization, including customers, users, and other peer groups
  • Experience in proposal development and writing
  • Experience preparing and presenting reports and briefings both orally and written
  • Enthusiastic and energetic performer able to work in a fast-paced, highly visible setting
  • Self-motivated and capable of performing tasks with limited oversight Preferred Skills and Education
  • Strong network of associates in Government, Industry, and Academia
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technology solutions within organizations
