Business Development Manager, Weapon Systems

Job Description

BAE Systems is hiring a Business Development Manager that will serve as the BD lead for our Weapons product area.

The BD Manager for Weapons will be responsible for:

  • Growing the opportunity pipeline, to include existing as well as adjacent markets/customers, through diligent and timely identification/qualification of new business opportunities by leveraging current technologies, customer intimacies, and inter-company collaboration
  • Support the development and execution of strategic and tactical plans for the pursuit and successful capture of key opportunities
  • Serving as the voice of the customer to the product area and serving as the voice of the product area to the customer. Working with the product area leadership and advising them on leads and opportunities that might be pursued and the resources and possible changes required to do so.
  • Identifying and qualifying new business development opportunities to improve the company's business portfolio to include marketing and customer call plans
  • Obtaining marketing intelligence and competitive data pertaining to potential targeted pursuits, and develop marketing strategies
  • Educating customers and shaping customer requirements
  • Establishing, building, and maintaining customer relationships
  • Assessing competitor capabilities aligned to specific customers in assigned market space
  • Supporting capture efforts to include providing market, competitor and customer intelligence, supporting color teams and recommending resources to address gaps
  • Making informed recommendations on pursue / no pursue and bid / no bid decisions.
  • Supporting creation and execution of multi-year business development strategies
  • Informing IRAD and B&P funding / priority planning as well as overhead budgets to include Sales & Marketing.
  • Providing inputs to the WS US BD director help develop and adjust the business strategy
  • Providing written and verbal reports through recurring mechanisms on the status of leads, opportunities and capture efforts.
  • Position will be located in Arlington, Virginia or Minneapolis, Minnesota with travel requirements between these locations and customer facilities.

    Typical Education & Experience

    Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years work experience or equivalent experience

    Required Skills and Education
    • Bachelor's of Science degree in a technical field and/or business administration
    • At least seven years of business development experience or equivalent in the defense industry, government/military, or in a science and technology community
    Preferred Skills and Education
    • Surface naval background or knowledge of surface warfare customer community preferred
    • Capture experience as a capture manager or functional lead on a capture preferred.
    • Masters' degree in math, science, engineering, or business administration desired.
    • Knowledge of DoD Acquisition process
    • Proven ability to operate effectively in ad hoc teams and groups
    • Knowledge of naval and army weapon systems
    • Knowledge of Naval Surface warfare community preferred; knowledge of Army and USMC armament systems community desired
    • Knowledge of NAVSEA, OPNAV preferred.
    • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and listening skills, and orientation to details, and the ability to make informed decisions;
    • A creative problem solver
    • The ability to clearly and simply articulate compelling business opportunities both written and verbal; multi-lingual skills preferred
    • Excellent network with a proven ability to build successful, long-term customer relationships
    • Superior research, analytical, and negotiating skills
    • Willingness to take ownership, accept accountability, and thrive under pressure
    • An understanding of U.S. Government export rules and regulations as stipulated by the Department of Commerce's Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the Department of State's International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Well-versed in the rules and regulations of Foreign Military Sales
    • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications
