Architecture Lead

Job Description
This position shall be located at our Minneapolis site

In close coordination with the Program Engineering Manager and the Systems Engineering Integration & Test (SEIT) Lead, the Architecture Lead plans, manages, and executes System Architecture activities on the program. Coordinates and provides technical direction. Determines and communicates program objectives and strategies for their accomplishment with both the implementation team, and with program and functional leadership. Ensures project technical, performance, cost, schedule, and quality requirements are met.

Specifically, the Architecture Lead:

  • Develops, implements, and manages project plans to include detailed task definition, resource requirements, schedule, quality, and cost parameters. Assesses project risk areas and develops risk mitigation plans. Prepares, monitors, and controls budgets and schedules, reporting on technical, cost, and schedule status. Acts as the Cost Account Manager for SEIT work packages
  • Implements, and manages process and tools to identify program issues, assess impact, formulate action plans and track to resolution (including both internal and external teams/organization)
  • Applies broad knowledge of multiple engineering principles and disciplines, including customer understanding and advanced knowledge of products or technology area in guiding and reviewing project direction and outcomes. Resolves conflicts between individual subsystems or disciplines to the benefit of total system performance, quality, reliability, and cost
  • Plans and manages internal and external resources ensuring all project obligations and objectives are met with regard to engineering the system's requirements, achieving an optimal systems architecture within the constraints of the program, ensuring that the specialty areas including reliability, maintainability, testability, safety, and human factors, are adequately considered and balanced in design decisions. This includes the timely identification of resource needs, identification and management of technical risks, providing project leadership, and anticipating and resolving inter/intra group conflict
  • Performs requirements analysis and derivation, performance prediction, allocation of system-level requirements to lower level requirements, and requirements management
  • Conceptualizes, creates, and analyzes systems architectures to ensure technical outcomes are consistent with customer and company requirements
  • Establishes and controls inter and intra-system interfaces
  • Plans and manages System Integration including design integration, Simulation Emulation Stimulation (SES), HW/SW integration, Regression testing, and Hardware-In-The-Loop (HWIL) testing
  • Plans and manages Systems Test from development through final acceptance- Verifying that the system meets its requirements, and Validating that the system performs in accordance with the customer/user expectations
  • Identifies and controls KPPs, TPMs, SWAP-C and other system metrics as required.
  • Establishes and leads Configuration Management. Chairs the Change Control Board (CCB)
  • Prepares and presents briefings to management and customers relative to area of expertise and responsibility
  • Plans, supports, and participates in reviews including peer reviews, technical/design reviews, and program reviews
  • Supports proposal efforts
  • Continuously strives to maintain and enhance the technical reputation of BAE Systems with customers and industry
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline plus 12 years relevant experience; or a Master's degree and 10 years experience; or a Ph.D. and 7 years experience
  • Minimum 2 years leading Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) or Systems Engineering functional teams
  • Minimum 5 years experience developing precision munitions including the concept of operations for employing them
  • Knowledge and familiarity with relevant standards and practices for design of precision munitions
  • Knowledge and familiarity with relevant standards and practices for production of precision munitions
  • Advanced knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices and broad knowledge across multiple technical disciplines/applications
  • Working knowledge of specialty engineering disciplines, especially safety and reliability
  • Ability to identify, define, interpret, and develop new and creative technical solutions to solve complex engineering problems involving conflicting requirements/designs/contract direction/policies
  • Ability to conduct structured decision making
  • Ability to make technical, persuasive presentations to high level customers, industry leaders, and senior management
Preferred Skills and Education
  • Master's Degree in Engineering or related field
  • Strong background in mechanical / electrical product design (5-10 years)
  • Minimum 10 years experience developing precision munitions including the concept of operations for employing them
  • Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification
  • Familiarity with air defense systems such as AEGIS and Patriot
  • Familiarity with weapon systems such as the Mk 34 Gun Weapon System and the 155 mm family of Army artillery
  • Familiarity and relevant experience with system modeling practices, languages and tools including those used for Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and/or operational virtual prototypes. Familiarity with Magic Draw and Matlab
