Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic

This occupation requires the installation, maintenance, modifications, overhaul and repair and performance testing of all types of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems, chilled water system and electronic building environmental management systems, central plant HVAC systems and equipment.


Determine the sequences required to install, maintain, adjust, modify, test, and perform major overhaul and repair of mechanical and refrigerated air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and ventilating systems. Such as, Cascade, absorption, centrifugal and humidify/dehumidify equipment, chilled water systems, high temperature hot water heating systems, computer control building management systems, and environmental test chambers, by interpreting blue prints, calculation of heat loads, sizing and typing equipment for heat load, industry energy conservation standards, manufacturer and company specifications and written and verbal instructions.

Make initial settings and final adjustments of mechanical and refrigerated air conditioning systems and modify existing installations to obtain required results. This includes such duties as:

Install, repair, maintained adjust evaporators, condensers, compressors and metering devices.

Determine controls and related equipment. Charge air conditioning and refrigeration systems with proper type and amount of refrigerant and reclaim refrigerant from systems per industry standards.

Test and adjust complete systems after installation, repair and modification. Perform periodic or special preventive maintenance inspections.

Repair, maintain and install electronic controls, programmable controls, low voltage controls, and pneumatic controls.

Performs silver soldering and brazing on copper tubing.

Performs water testing and water treatment operations to air conditioning, cooling towers condenser water chilled water loop[closed loop system] hot water boiler loop [closed loop system]and refrigeration equipment.

Manufacture and modify ducting as required.

May perform adjustments and control of building environmental systems from off-site via computer.

Required Skills and Education Required education: High School/GED


Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Exhibit sound interpersonal skills involving interfacing and coordinating with company personnel, customers, and suppliers. Make decisions using sound judgment while complying with policies, procedures, appropriate principles and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

A. Typical Education/Skills/Certification High School Diploma or equivalent, Trade School or equivalent, Certificate of Completion at the Universal Level, for the Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification Program. Preferred Skills and Education Typical Related Experience

Ten years Air Conditioning & Refrigeration experience preferred.
