Principal Cloud Performance Engineer

Job Description

As a Principal Cloud Performance Engineer at Atlassian, you will join an engineering-led company and the award-winning leader in software development and collaboration tools.

We're looking for a technical expert in the field of cloud SaaS performance who will apply their experience to assist our development teams in designing new performant systems, identify & solve performance issues in existing systems and help drive a performance engineering culture across Atlassian's product & platform engineering teams. 

This role is a great opportunity for someone who not only has a desire to directly impact the experience of millions of active users but who also enjoys influencing the way engineering teams approach performance. Teams will be looking to you as the expert for advice as they decompose monolithic products into microservices. You will be exposed to many different technologies, architectures and systems all hosted on our in-house PaaS built on top of AWS.

More about you

On your first day, we'll expect:

  • Substantial experience in identifying and solving bottlenecks in applications backed by SQL databases
  • A deep understanding of common performance patterns and anti-patterns in distributed systems
  • Strong expertise in profiling and optimising Java code and JVM
  • Experience helping teams design performant, highly available, scalable web applications

The following are not required, but definite bonuses:

  • An understanding of the benefits & challenges of typical web application patterns, SOA, 12-factor, microservices & serverless architectures
  • A desire to work across multiple software development languages like Ruby, Node, Go
  • Expertise working with multiple types of datastores (RDBMS, NoSql, search, analytics)
  • Previous experience with AWS components such as EC2, RDS, S3, DynamoDB, Kinesis
  • Exposure to containerisation technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes or Mesosphere
