As a senior engineering manager, you will help build on our Cloud Infrastructure practice at Apple within the ML Platform & Infrastructure (MLPI) and AIML. You will be responsible for the existing team and growing the program. The AIML Cloud Infrastructure team is responsible for the core infrastructure that Apple AIML properties run on, this includes Siri and Search The team provides tools, scaling strategies, deployment mechanisms, best practices, and multi-cloud support as both a service and consultants to leadership. The team will additionally have a heavy focus on cost control and efficiencies across properties. As our applications and systems become more sophisticated our user experience becomes paramount and a partnership with our observability, services, security, and privacy teams will be a part of your charter. You will be a direct link between developers and our customers so a focus on understanding how code and infrastructure make or break customer experience will be a focus. We are looking for a best-in-class leader who can move between engineering lead and cross-functional seer who can identify gaps and bring together teams to focus on improving our applications and services through efficient scalable infrastructure and driving results.

  • You have designed, operated, and implemented externally facing Cloud deployed applications and infrastructure at a very large scale and you will be well-versed in the operation of complex architectures.
  • You know distributed systems and how to avoid engineering yourself into a corner through innovative design.
  • You realize you can accomplish more with an open mind than you can by dictating architecture. You will have to understand historical architectural choices and drive the "right" change
  • You are an authority at partnering with and guiding senior staff-level engineers to do their best work.

Description

• Own the Cloud Infrastructure program in partnership with AIML Leaders • Define and drive the Cloud Infrastructure roadmap, work across the organization and across functions to deliver quality customer experiences • Partner on projects that improve Observability, Security, and efficiency in AIML deployments • Collaborate with various technical teams to incorporate strong reliability and availability practices for our services, mitigate risks and adhere to Apple's privacy stance. • Work with Engineering teams to improve code to simple deployments and improve reliability • Cultivate positive relationships with executives and peers across the organization to ensure alignment and delivery of the best in class services. • Develop tools and best practices that can be used across the AIML portfolio of applications and services. • Present infrastructure architecture and roadmaps in executive-level review meetings and discuss ongoing efforts to improve further system utilization, customer experience, and cost controls. • Help identify opportunities and improve the processes and culture of the engineering organization across Apple • Identify staffing needs, recruit for, and mentor the new and existing engineers

Education & Experience

Advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent software engineering experience

Additional Requirements

  • 8+ years of engineering management/leadership experience
  • Prior production large-scale experience for external facing applications and services
  • Expertise with cloud computing services (AWS, GCP) and Kubernetes-based deployments
  • Experience with Modern Observability tooling (Prometheus, DataDog, Splunk, Jaeger, Grafana, etc)
  • Track record of cross-functional leadership fostering good engineering practices, respect at all levels, and inclusivity
  • Track record as a manager building teams and the careers of your direct reports
  • Show experience in mentoring and coaching and having a people-focussed mindset
  • Experience building, supporting, and maintaining full-stack deployments
  • Experience working with and leading globally dispersed teams
  • Strong experience with large complex data ecosystems
  • You understand and have exposure to high scale, highly available 4 9's systems
  • You are a change agent for good
  • Proven track record of understanding what matters and the ability to identify the "important work"

Pay & Benefits

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $196,000 and $299,000, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

    Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
