Business Innovations Intern

The American Association for the Advancement of Science seeks a Business Innovations Intern to identify new revenue opportunities through our New Business Innovations process (NBI). We’re looking for someone who can apply highly-developed investigative skills to help us identify and analyze these opportunities, including by assessing how similar organizations have successfully diversified their revenue streams.

This is a paid internship at our headquarters in downtown DC. This research is very important to AAAS New Business Innovations. We therefore expect a 20-40 hour-per-week commitment for up to six months.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Performing market landscape research on revenue diversification efforts in similar organizations;

    • Identify non-profits, professional societies and publishing organizations that have diversified through new revenue-driving products or services
    • Gather information from online, archival and other sources
    • Identify and interview key persons who helped drive diversification efforts
    • Report on how successful such organizations are at generating new revenue streams
    • Propose opportunities for AAAS to pursue, based on business models developed, to NBI and our Innovation Council
  • Helping to create culture change at AAAS by assisting in the implementation of a regular Innovation Club and contributing to monthly meetings and development of ideas for new lines of business

    • Report to iClub members regularly on ongoing research
    • Propose new business ideas for discussion at meetings and Trellis forums
    • Help shape new idea submissions and concept validation plans 

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and enrollment in a graduate program

  • Experience with research methodologies, including interviewing skills

  • Adept at collecting, analyzing and synthesizing information from a variety of sources

  • Intellectual curiosity, lateral-thinking and other attributes of a creative mind

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Attention to detail and accuracy

  • Data visualization skills

  • Adept at using Excel to model and report data

  • Interest in the mission of AAAS, in innovation and in product development

  • An entrepreneurial spirit

  • Background in consulting is highly desired

  • Background in new product development a plus
