Principal Advanced Materials Specialist

Job Description
As a Principal Advanced Material Specialist you will plan, propose and lead development studies of new materials and fabrication and finishing processes. These materials and processes will be critical to Industrial Design and Product Development for defining roadmaps. You will participate as part of the Engineering Product Development team, working directly with the Industrial Designers, Product Design Engineers, Operations Supply Base Management and Contract Fabrication Engineering and production teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Enable new functionality for existing products or create new products based on innovations in materials
  • Provide guidance on the trade-offs in mechanical, electrical, optical, and acoustic device performance based on material properties
  • Provide materials leadership to design teams to understand limitations imposed by material properties
  • Own resolution of materials problems that arise during pre-production and production builds
  • Lead new technology investigations to demonstrate readiness of new materials for inclusion in future products
  • Participate in design & planning through DFM, as well as process yield, capacity and cost modeling
  • Travel to oversee fabrication process qualification and corrective action

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • 10+ years of experience in Material Science or Manufacturing Processes
  • Experience architecting materials fabrication processes
  • Experience in materials innovations leading to new products or enhanced functionality of existing products
  • Experience tracing device performance issues to materials related root causes and rectifying the problems
  • Experience in production process qualification, measurement and analysis
  • Experience in high volume production
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and statistics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related field
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Enthusiasm for getting “hands on” with product and production equipment
  • Experience working with overseas partners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including effective presentation of complex data
  • Experience in plastic molding, including knowledge of IMD, transfer molding, Double Shot and insert molding
  • Experience in metal forming, including knowledge of forming, casting, forging and CNC techniques
  • Experience with high quality finishing, including knowledge of polishing, plating, painting, coating and metallization
  • Familiarity with ProEngineer Wildfire, MoldFlow
  • Demonstrated ability to start projects and drive to completion and achieve “actionable” results
