We are the store of choice for authoritative, highly durable, highly available, low-latency data and as such are a foundational tier zero service for Amazon and the many customers who have built their services on top of DynamoDB.
DynamoDB is looking for a Research Scientist who would help propel DynamoDB to new levels of profitability while safeguarding customer data as a top priority. As a Research Scientist on the DynamoDB team, your initial focus will be on fleet optimization and auto-healing. We have tens of thousands of nodes in our fleet and the number grows every day. These nodes host a myriad of customers, with millions of tables and partitions, all requiring various capabilities and constraints. In order to increase the business's profitability we want to get to the next level of insight and optimization of our fleet utilization. We also need to decide how to evolve the fleet over time in terms of the hardware that we select and our hardware acquisition pace.
We have barely scratched the surface in terms of the techniques that we employ to maximize fleet utilization or characterizing the risks that are involved in that. This is fertile ground for an innovative and action-oriented Research Scientist who’d like to make a significant contribution to the financial bottom line of a foundational AWS service. In this role, you will work closely with the engineering team, providing insights and recommendations on changes to our software and operations. You will also work closely with product management to explore pricing and SLAs of potential future products. Providing business analysis using mathematical modeling tools to answer important questions for DynamoDB.
Manage a pipeline of research projects within a schedule, work with the development and business team to prioritize and estimate delivery schedules and costs.
Utilizing code (Java, Python) for modeling (optimization, simulation, statistical).
Maintain a current understanding of industry and technology trends in the area of research science.
Partnering closely with many groups such as operations, PM, development and finance teams to support various business initiatives.
Understand business context to decisions made within and across groups. Effectively communicating with senior management as well as with colleagues from computer science, operations research and business background.
Actively participate in hiring talented people and assist in the career development of others both on and outside your team, mentoring individuals and helping other managers guide the career growth of their team members.
Demonstrate high levels of creativity and right judgment.
Contribute to Amazon's Intellectual Property through patents and/or external publications.
- Graduate degree in operations research, statistics, engineering, mathematics, or computer science and 7+ years of related work experience OR a PhD and 3+ years of related work experience
- Ability to code with an object oriented language
- Ability to develop system prototypes
- Experience with mathematical libraries like CPLEX, XPRESS, and SAS/R

Project management experience desired for working on cross-functional projects
Software development experience
Exposure to scripting languages, relational databases and Linux
Familiarity with cloud computing/data center logistical concepts - forecasting, planning, optimization, and logistics - gained through work experience or graduate level education
Technical aptitude and familiarity with the design and use of complex logistics software systems
Experience working effectively with software engineering teams
