The Alexa Gadgets Cloud Service team is hiring Sr. Software Development Engineer to deliver new features across our existing Alexa Gadgets, as well as building future platform services.
Alexa Gadgets is a part of Alexa Devices organization. The Devices team engineers high-profile consumer electronic devices like Fire tablets, Fire TV, Amazon Dash Buttons, and Amazon Echo. Gadgets are Bluetooth/USB based accessories of Echo family of devices. The services we create for our products are also made available to creators, enabling them to create a broader set of Alexa-powered novelty products.


We are looking for a talented, detail-oriented and enthusiastic Software Development Engineer who is passionate about quality and is enthusiastic about building innovative, low latency, scalable cloud services. You will have an exciting opportunity to make a large impact on the architecture, design, and development of our consumer services.
In this role, you will:

  • Develop scalable cloud services that can handle millions of requests
  • Investigate and propose design approaches, prototype new technology and evaluate technical feasibility
  • Map out the Architecture and Design of new and current systems
  • Build features that push the limits of the platform's capabilities
  • Break down complex software project into parallel work that can be performed by you and other SDEs and then reassembled successfully into a cohesive launch
  • Participate in the hiring process as well as mentor others - improving their skills, their knowledge, and their ability to get things done

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of professional programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
  • Demonstrated experience in Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
  • Deep knowledge of and experience with best practices in object oriented programming languages such as C++ and Java
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, continuous Integration, continuous deployment and operations
  • Writing automated unit, integration and regression tests
  • Passionate problem solver, self starter and willing to dive deep into unfamiliar and existing code base
  • Experience mentoring other software engineers and leading development of complex software systems
  • Ability to work quickly towards tight deadlines, and make smart tradeoffs between speed, accuracy, and maintainability
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skill


  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related technical field
  • 2+ years of experience in cloud software design, development and debugging preferably on AWS based platforms
  • Experience working with various networking protocols and technology stacks
  • Experience with resolving system performance issues involving latency, CPU utilization, memory and storage
  • Troubleshooting and debugging production issues
  • Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project
  • Excellence in technical communication with peers, partners, and non-technical cohorts
