Software Development Engineer, Last Mile Routing

Description

The Last Mile Route Planning team is at the heart of Amazon's growing logistics network. We are looking for a Software Development Engineer with strong technical ability, great communication skills, a passion for solving hard problems, and developing large, scalable solutions.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of real world delivery processes and technology. You will learn about real-time adaptive transportation solutions, routing algorithms and optimizations, how to operate on large-scale datasets, and more. You will work with research scientists, senior engineers and product managers in a fast paced and growing environment, where ideas are prototyped, tested, and implemented at speed.

The problems we are iterating on include:

  • Given the tens of thousands of packages that each delivery station received during the night and the hundreds of drivers that will deliver them today (with varying sizes of vehicles, start times, shift lengths, and local knowledge) what are the best routes for us to run today to minimize our cost, and maximize our delivery success rate.
  • Given a continuous stream of orders for delivery over the next couple of hours, and the changing locations of a fleet of drivers, assign orders to drivers in a way that optimizes utilization and on time delivery success.

The coming year is all about bigger problems, better solutions, and more use cases. If you are deeply technical, highly innovative and long for the opportunity to build pioneering solutions to challenging problems, we want to talk to you about being a part of it.

Basic Qualifications

  • A relevant Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience)
  • 2+ years professional experience in software development
  • Excellent problem solving abilities and object-oriented design skills
  • Fluency in an object-oriented programming languages, like Java
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in optimization algorithms development (e.g, supply chain optimization, operations research, network design, machine learning, etc.) and/or the transportation domain
