Senior Software Development Engineer

Windhof, Luxembourg

DESCRIPTION

Our ambition is to be Earth's most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online at the lowest possible prices. How do we get there? What does it take to solve our customers' everyday online shopping problems? Do our customers find what they are looking for? If they find what they are looking for, is it competitively priced? And if they find what they are looking for a competitive price, can it be delivered fast enough? In today's ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, how do we make sure that people across the globe can still get essential goods delivered to their homes as fast as possible? How do we reach people who are not native English speakers when there are over 7000 languages spoken in the world? How do we facilitate a seamless payment experience when there are over 180 currencies used in the world with diverse payment methods? How do we solve problems for people who have different shopping behaviours from our regular amazon.com shoppers?

Senior SDE @Amazon:
Scale at Amazon is, well, really big. There are few companies out there building at our scale and complexity, and even fewer in Europe. As a Senior Software Development Engineer (Senior SDE), you'll be part of a small group of peers that make the Amazon magic happen. Whether it's ownership of existing software or working on new products, you will lead the design and implementation of large-scale efforts from the technical perspective. You'll not only code, but also drive the direction of the software architecture, and work proactively with other teams on integration projects. Our Senior SDEs enjoy a great deal of autonomy. In addition to owning the architecture of a larger product, you will lead code reviews, mentor engineers, and drive important technical decisions.
Senior SDEs at Amazon are above all problem solvers, those we trust most in making technical decisions for how we build our software. They know every line of code we write matters in building great products. As the technical experts on their teams, Senior SDEs come from all different backgrounds, some deeply specialized, while others have a more generalist background. In any case, they are able to keep an eye on big picture while still keeping a finger on the pulse of the details; using both to inform their architectural and design decisions. Senior SDEs also have an eye on the bigger picture and influencing business strategy. Product managers and non-technical stakeholders will depend on you to balance technological demands with business needs.

Luxembourg - Wëllkomm zu Lëtzebuerg!
Our teams in Luxembourg are in the middle of everything. As the headquarters for Amazon's European operations, Luxembourg is home to leadership teams from across the company. The office is a great opportunity to work closely with both business and technical leads on critical projects and grow your career.
The country itself is in the middle of Europe. Set among a picturesque background of medieval ruins, Luxembourg City is home to numerous multinational companies which creates a diverse city. 7 out of 10 residents of Luxembourg City are expats, who hail from 167 different countries. In addition to having three official languages: Luxembourgish, German, and French, English is widely spoken. Simply put, Luxembourg works hard to make expats feel at home. For those who love to travel, the country is centrally located making it easy to visit cities such as, Paris, Cologne, and Brussels by train. Barcelona, Rome and Berlin can be reached in less than two hours by air.

Amazon's goal is to expand into 150 countries by 2022. Luxembourg is the home of International Consumer (Intech) teams focusing on international expansion of our websites around the world.

We build software that improves the customer shopping experience across all of Amazon's European websites and mobile apps. We do this by developing our own customer-facing features, services and platforms based on custom European needs, and through partnerships with other Amazon technical teams around the world. Our work spans a deep technology stack from front-end customer experience to back-end service technology and has high visibility to senior leadership, with small teams delivering highly significant projects. If that charter sounds big it is! But we're not alone. We have a team of Product Managers, Technical Project Managers, UX Designers and QA Engineers that work with us on the EUCX team, and we work highly collaboratively to produce cool and impactful features, services and programs that customers use right away.
Amazon European Fulfilment Network (EFN)
EFN is the technical team that owns and operates the engine of Amazon's European retail business. Our goal is to make all products in a given country available on all of Amazon's European websites, at the lowest possible cost, and in the language of the customer. We create services to store and ship products across the European landscape, providing the best product price and availability to our European customers. We measure impact in the hundreds of millions: whether it's the number of products or cost savings for customers. Our team is building local, and thinking global; we're working to solve EU challenges and using that learning as we grow globally. The work of the team changes systems across Amazon to drive improvements in Supply Chain Optimization technologies. We are motivated problem-solvers who embrace the end-to-end ownership of services that make tens of millions of retail decisions every minute, within a distributed technical environment. Our engineers create the best European shopping experience possible.

EMEA Expansion Team
When Amazon started, it had 0% of the retail industry's market share, now it accounts for 43% just for the US market. We did this by having a relentless obsession over our Customers, in fact, for the ninth consecutive year, Customers ranked Amazon #1 in Customer Satisfaction. Never a company to stand still, this team is working to bring Amazon into a new multi-billion dollar market, where we plan to deliver the same level of Customer Service as in retail. One of our challenge here is to understand how we can utilize and scale our existing architecture to serve market expansion.
Amazon Consumer Localization
The Consumer Localization team builds the services to automatically make all of Amazon's selection available to customers world-wide, on all 10+ Amazon marketplaces, in 10+ languages. We're responsible for building fun software like machine translation models, systems for human-in-the-loop machine learning, and large-scale data processing pipelines. Using AWS, we build global-scale services that integrate with Amazon's core e-commerce technologies (eg catalog, pricing, fulfilment). The services we provide are key to powering Amazon's international expansion, localizing millions of products world-wide every day.

Hardlines

The Hardlines technical teams own the end-to-end experience for multiple stores on European retail sites in areas such as Consumer Electronics, Wireless, Automotive, Toys/Games and Sports/Outdoors; just to name a few. We solve real problems for real customers.

In Hardlines, you will have the opportunity to learn and use a broad range of technologies from front-end applications to back-end services and at the same time, resolve cool and interesting problems. Our applications are built using a combination of Object Oriented, Functional, and Scripting languages like Java, C++, Closure, Ruby, and Perl. We consume a lot of Amazon Web Services (AWS) like EC2, S3, and DynamoDB, and a lot of internal services like Authentication, Payments, Catalog and Search. We have built many services and systems that are now deployed globally. We will continue
to innovate and build new features to meet business and customer needs.

Softlines

The Softlines business group is one of Amazon's four core retail businesses, along with Hardlines, Consumables and Media. Softlines comprises of four product categories; Apparel, Shoes, Jewelry and Watches. Each of the categories are led by a business leader who is responsible for Vendor Management, In-Stock Management, Online Marketing, and Third Party Merchant Product Management.
