DESCRIPTION

Amazon Athena is an interactive query service that makes it easy to analyze data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL. Athena provides a server-less experience, so there is no infrastructure for customers to set up or manage. Customers can simply point to their data in Amazon S3, infer schema, and start querying using the AWS Console/API or through JDBC/ODBC clients and interactive BI applications such as Tableau or Amazon Quicksight. Behind the scenes, Athena determines the compute needed to run each query, automatically scales, and executes queries in parallel to provide fast results even when running complex queries over large datasets. Creating such a simple and fast querying experience, and operating at scale to delight hundreds of customers opens up challenging engineering problems to solve. That's where you come in. Athena is growing fast, and we are looking for a software engineering leader who can lead Athena's control plane teams to the next evolution of the service. In this role, you will own the API's and client interfaces used by Athena customers, and build and operate a highly available compute infrastructure that elastically scales to enable a growing number of customers to run distributed queries. The leader we are looking for is passionate about building and operating large scale distributed systems, and experienced at hiring, managing, and developing engineering teams to deliver fast results.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent work experience
• 10+ years' experience developing a complex software product
• 8+ years' experience in software engineering management
• 3+ years' experience in managing managers (Leader of leaders)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Proven track record of building and managing high performing engineering teams
• Experience building and operating distributed systems or big data applications at large scale
• Experience delivering performance optimization features; particularly query optimization experience is a huge plus
• Experience with database systems internals and query execution
• Experience working with open source software such as Presto, Spark, or Hive

• Masters or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering
