2 months agoRedmond, WA

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

This role is for an innovative and dynamic individual to develop the mechanical design of spacecraft battery systems. In this role, you'll work on developing high reliability battery systems designed for high volume, low cost production. This is a hands-on role requiring the design, development, test, and analysis of all aspects of spacecraft batteries.

• Design subassemblies for the mechanical packaging of the battery
• Design tooling for R&D builds and experiments
• Develop detailed drawings for mechanical components
• Work with vendors to have parts produced
• Drive failure investigations to root cause
• Design experiments to support trades and investigations
• Develop prototypes for test and performance evaluation against requirements
• Support qualification and acceptance testing to verify design

Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

• Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience
• 3+ years of work experience with a CAD design tool (NX, SolidWorks, etc)
• 3+ years of hands on experience with development or production hardware
• 1+ years of experience in analysis of structural and dynamic loading, including finite element analysis
• 1+ years of relevant experience in design, development, or testing of lithium battery systems

• Knowledge of lithium battery operation and safety/hazard concerns
• Hands on experience with high energy and/or high energy or power lithium battery systems
• Knowledge of lithium battery hazard mitigation methods
• Experience with battery abuse testing
• Experience with volume production of battery systems
• Experience with design of experiments
• Experience with geometric drawing and tolerances
• Strong analytic and problem solving skills
