DESCRIPTION
Does the idea of managing a team whose goal is to develop world class taxonomies to organize Amazon's mammoth selection of products sound fun to you? Are you as obsessed with the customer experience as you are with managing, mentoring, and developing taxonomists?
We are looking for a smart, passionate, detail-oriented leader to join our Browse Taxonomy leadership team. This person will manage a team of Taxonomists who build world-class, intuitive, and comprehensive taxonomy and ontology data that is used across Amazon to optimize product discovery and classification. As a Taxonomy manager, you will have the opportunity to support global taxonomy strategies while advocating for innovative local customer product discovery experiences. You will lead a group of Taxonomy data modeling experts and will work with a group of experienced Taxonomy management peers.
Taxonomy Manager Responsibilities:
• Manage a team of taxonomists who develop taxonomy models to organize Amazon's extensive product selection for customers
• Expand and refine data retrieval techniques to utilize our extensive product catalog and make sure products end up in the right place for our customers
• Coordinate cross-functional projects with a broad range of merchandisers, engineers, designers, and other groups
• Analyze website metrics and customer behavior data to make intelligent decisions on optimizing our taxonomy models
• Build roadmaps, reporting to Taxonomy leadership as well as business leadership
• Partner with Taxonomy Managers and Taxonomists globally to align on standard Taxonomy modeling best practices and meaningful local exceptions
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's degree in Library or Information Science or equivalent professional experience
• 5+ years experience directly managing a team in a Taxonomy, Catalog, or Content development organization in E-Commerce on Tech environment
• 5+ years experience in Taxonomy Development
• Proven leadership skills and teamwork skills. You have experience guiding, coaching, hiring, and promoting a team and can balance diving deep enough to support your team's day-to-day needs while also thinking big enough to raise the bar
• Excellent project management skills and experience managing complex roadmaps
• Proven ability to work and deliver effectively in customer-focused, cross-functional teams
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Great verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical and metadata information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience working in environments with aggressive deadlines and production environments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience working in a global Taxonomy or Ontology organization
• Proven ability to work and deliver effectively in customer-focused, cross-functional teams
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Passionate about website usability and the role of metadata in improving customer shopping experiences
• Detail oriented, self-motivated, and calm under pressure
• Proven ability to tie Taxonomy delivery with customer-centric outcomes
• Most of all, someone who is smart, likes to do good work and inspire others to do good work, and is genuinely interested in helping customers
