GHRS - Operations Research Scientist

The HR Economics & Research team focuses on the application of microeconometric and machine learning methods designed to enable Amazon to attract, retain, and develop the world's most effective workforce. All of this work is performed in close coordination with senior business leaders. These are exciting fast-paced businesses in which we get to work on extremely interesting analytical problems, in an environment where you get to learn from other experienced scientists and apply econometrics, statistics, and machine learning at massive scale.

As a member of HR Economics & Research you will partner closely with a team of Economists, Research Scientists, and Business Intelligence Engineers as we work with service teams throughout the organization on efforts to improve their capacity planning and optimize network labor usage. Our service teams provide global coverage, handle millions of calls and transactions per year, and are growing fast. Come help us enable 24/7 support for every Amazonian around the world. Your role will involve developing models to optimize scheduling and routing of work between teams and inventing at scale. You will have the opportunity to build models from the ground up and help our team identify the best opportunities for optimization.

In this role you will:

  • Build and operationalize analytical models
  • Perform model refreshes or updates to analyses as needed
  • Work collaboratively with Economists and Research Scientists to assist in the design and implementation of analysis to answer challenging HR questions
  • Interpret and communicate results to outside customers
  • Aggregate and analyze data pulled from disparate sources (HR, Finance or other business systems) and related industry and external benchmarks; provide insights and a point of view on analysis and recommendations
  • Assist in the design and delivery of automated, scalable analytical models to stakeholders

Report results in a manner which is both statistically rigorous and compellingly relevant

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Operations Research, Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science
  • One or more years of experience in a postdoctoral position; or, one or more years of experience in consulting, government or academic research
  • Familiarity with Java, C++, C#, Python, or equivalent
  • Experience in developing and solving large scale mathematical programming models-familiarity with staffing, assignment, and scheduling problems are preferred
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants with considerably more experience, including mid-career, are also strongly encouraged
  • Strong background in statistics methodology, applications to business problems, and/or big data
  • Experience in using statistical analysis software packages (e.g., R)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced business environment
  • Strong research track record
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills
