The Amazon Demand team seeks a Senior Applied Scientist to join our team. Scientists in Demand lead the development of novel algorithmic architectures, toward the ultimate goal of accurately predicting customer demand for millions of products world-wide. This drives down costs and enables the offer of lower prices and better in-stock selection for our customers.

Working collaboratively, you will develop solutions to complex problems, such as designing the next generation of algorithms to drive the . As a Senior Applied Scientist, you will continue to contribute to the research community, by working with other scientists across Amazon and our , as well as collaborating with academic researchers and publishing papers. Within Demand , our Science community values teamwork, supports continued , and recognizes the need to take chances and try new ideas that may fail. Furthermore, our builder culture means that Scientists and Software Development Engineers work closely together to invent and construct at a massive scale. Recent work from Demand includes papers presented at the NIPS 2017 Time Series Workshop, KDD 2018 Time Series Workshop, and ICML 2018 Generative Models Workshop.

• Drive collaborative research and creative problem solving
• Constructively critique peer research and mentor junior scientists and engineers
• Prototype and implement new algorithms and prediction techniques
• Collaborate with product managers and engineering teams to design and implement software solutions for Amazon problems
• Contribute to progress of the Amazon and broader research communities by producing publications


• PhD or equivalent Master's Degree plus 4+ years of experience in CS, CE, ML or related field
• 2+ years of experience of building machine learning models for business application
• Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
• Ph.D./M.S. in Computer Science, , Operational Research, Statistics or a related quantitative field
• 1+ years of hands-on experience in modeling and analysis
• 1+ years hands-on experience in Python, Perl, Scala, Java, C#, C++ or other similar languages
• Proficiency in model development, model validation and model implementation for applications
• Strength in distilling problem definitions, models, and constraints from complex business problems and requirements
• Significant peer-reviewed scientific contributions in premier journals and conferences
• Ability to convey mathematical results to non-science stakeholders

• Ph.D. in Computer Science, , Operational Research, Statistics or a related quantitative field
• 1+ years of practical experience applying to solve complex problems in an applied environment
• 1+ years professional experience in software development
• Strong CS fundamentals in data structures, problem solving, algorithm design and complexity analysis
• Proven track record in technically leading and mentoring scientists
• Superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills, ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts
• Ability to work on a diverse team or with a diverse range of coworkers
